Wolves sign midfielder Guedioura

Filed under: Wolverhampton Wanderer by: admin

Wolves have signed midfielder Adlene Guedioura on loan from Charleroi for the rest of the season.

The 24-year-old Frenchman is the second midfielder from the Belgian club to join the Premier League outfit during the current campaign.

He follows Belgian international Geoffrey Mujangi Bia, 20, who signed a season-long loan deal last week.

“Adlene is an all-round midfield player who is very mobile,” Wolves manager Mick McCarthy told the club website.

“Technically, he is very good and has the physical characteristics to be able to cope with the Premier League.

“He’s another player who has been scouted abroad and I’m delighted we’ve been able to bring him in.”

Guedioura will be in the Wolves squad for Tuesday’s Premier League fixture against Liverpool at Molineux if he receives international clearance in time.

QPR sign Hill on loan from Wolves

Filed under: Wolverhampton Wanderer by: admin

Queens Park Rangers have signed defender Matt Hill on loan from Wolves until the end of the season.

The 28-year-old was part of Mick McCarthy’s side that won promotion to the Premier League.

Hill has made just two Premier League appearances, in the defeats to Blackburn and Manchester United, and once in the Carling Cup this term.

He told the club website: “Every footballer wants to be playing games and unfortunately I wasn’t at Wolves.”

He added: “QPR have given me that opportunity to do that here so I am delighted to join. I spoke to Mick Harford and the chat we had convinced me to come here.”

R’s boss Harford said: “I just felt we needed to strengthen the back four and this is a quality signing.

“Matt is very aggressive and good in the air. He’s a good talker and organiser, which is what we need.”

Wolves 2-2 Crystal Palace

Filed under: Wolverhampton Wanderer by: admin

Ronald Zubar’s 84th-minute volley spared Wolves’ blushes as they twice came from behind to take Crystal Palace side to an FA Cup fourth-round replay.

Alan Lee handed the Eagles a dream start after just two minutes when he headed home Ambrose’s corner.

But David Jones slotted in an equaliser after Kevin Foley’s cross was knocked back to him by Andrew Surman.

Darren Ambrose restored Palace’s lead with a curling free-kick before Zubar struck late on to rescue Wolves.

It denied Championship outfit Palace, who are 11 places below Wolves in the football pyramid, from claiming what would have been a superb win.

However, overall the result was a fair reflection of a stop-start encounter.

But Neil Warnock will feel he came close to teaching his old apprentice a thing or two, with Wolves boss Mick McCarthy having cleaned his boots during the pair’s playing days at Barnsley.

Palace will be pleased to have earned the right to take Wolves back to their own ground, but the one downside on the day was an injury to Claude Davis.

He received treatment following a seemingly innocuous aerial challenge with Sam Vokes as play was held up for five minutes.

As many as 10 medical staff were joined on the pitch by Eagles boss Warnock before the Palace centre-back was worryingly carried off on a stretcher.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy:

“It’s better than being out of the competition.

“I thought we had some chances to win it in the second half and Crystal Palace played well.

“We didn’t get anything other than what I expected from them. What I got from us, though, at the start of the first and second half is not what I expect.

“We’ve had to have a scrap, it was a cup tie. We’ve had to work harder than necessary just to get a draw.”

Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock:

“I can’t say enough good things about my side – an absolutely incredible little bunch.

“We deserve to be in the hat and it will not be an easy game for them down at Selhurst Park.

“I thought the ref (Chris Foy) had a poor first half, but as poor as he was in the first-half he was as good in the second.

“I think my half-time team-talk did the trick really – I asked him if he wanted some smelling salts, I didn’t think the concentration level was good enough from him in the first-half.”

Wolves bring in Mujangi on loan

Filed under: Wolverhampton Wanderer by: admin

Wolves have signed Belgium international midfielder Geoffrey Mujangi Bia on loan from Charleroi for the rest of the season.

The 20-year-old has passed a medical and could be available to play in the FA Cup against Crystal Palace if his international clearance comes through.

“He is a player we have been tracking for a while and will add creativity and firepower,” said boss Mick McCarthy.

“He can play on the right or the left, as well as centrally.”

Mujangi, who won his first senior cap for Belgium against Chile in May last year, has scored seven times in the Belgian First Division in 48 appearances for Charleroi.

“I first heard about the interest a couple of weeks ago and am very happy to have signed,” said the player.

“I’ve played in England once before with Belgium Under-21s and it’s been my dream to play in the Premier League.”

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey said he was a player with “enormous potential” and he hoped Wolves would be able to bring in “at least one or maybe two players” before the transfer window shuts.

Wolves 0-2 Wigan

Filed under: Wolverhampton Wanderer by: admin

James McCarthy and Charles N’Zogbia struck in the second half as Wigan picked up a precious win over fellow strugglers Wolves.

McCarthy tucked home the opener from 10 yards before N’Zogbia calmly slotted past Marcus Hahnemann.

Hahnemann had earlier saved a Hugo Rodallega penalty after Richard Stearman was sent off for a tug on McCarthy in the box.

Hendry Thomas then saw red for Wigan but the Latics comfortably held on.

It was a deserved win for the visitors and a welcome clean sheet after they had conceded an average of over three goals a game on their travels this season.

But it was a dismal afternoon for Wolves manager Mick McCarthy, whose side were outclassed for large periods by Wigan’s slick passing game.

The match pitched the Premier League’s most feeble attack against its leakiest defence, with Wolves having notched only 17 goals all season and Wigan conceding 44.

New signing Gary Caldwell was brought in to shore up the Latics’ back four but it was Wolves who had the first good opportunity.

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake has typified Wolves’ lacklustre form in front of goal this season – and the out-of-sorts striker had a gilt-edged chance to open the scoring.

Nenad Milijas adeptly squeezed the ball through a crowd of defenders into Ebanks-Blake’s path but the striker could only stab it wide from 10 yards out with just Chris Kirkland to beat.

Martinez relieved to get three points

Ebanks-Blake then missed another chance to score his first goal from open play all season – heading Stephen Ward’s excellent cross narrowly wide at the far post.

The scare appeared to spur Wigan on, especially their top marksman Rodallega, who proceeded to undertake a one-man mission to break the deadlock.

The Colombian first stung Hahnemann’s fingertips with a fierce drive that the keeper managed to steer around the post. Minutes later, he came even closer, letting rip from 25 yards and rattling the inside of Hahnemann’s post.

Rodallega’s best chance fell on the stroke of half-time when Stearman clumsily tugged back McCarthy and referee Howard Webb pointed to the penalty spot.

The Wolves right-back, who had been booked for a late challenge on Paul Scharner early on, was given a second yellow card and sent to the stands.

Rodallega hit his spot-kick hard and low but Hahnemann dived down to his right to expertly parry the shot – before Scharner scuffed the rebound wide.

Rodallega and Hahnemann resumed their personal duel after the break when the Colombian’s shot was well held by the American – but minutes later the impressive goalkeeper was finally beaten.

N’Zogbia broke down the right and cut the ball back to Rodallega, whose shot was parried by Hahnemann straight into the path of McCarthy – and he calmly stroked the ball into the corner from 10 yards.

It was the 19-year-old Irishman’s first Premier League start.

Ten-man Wolves were given a way back into the match when Webb brandished a second red card of the afternoon – Thomas receiving a second booking for a late challenge on Ward.

But any optimism for the home fans was quickly extinguished when N’Zogbia struck the visitors’ second.

Wolves’ defence failed to deal with a throw-in on the right-hand side and Rodallega touched the ball on to N’Zogbia, who cut inside and finished with ease.

Wolves attempted to muster a response and Chris Iwelumo forced a smart save from Kirkland – but Wigan never looked in danger of relinquishing their first win in six league matches.

There was still time for Hahnemann to deny Rodallega a final time when he foiled the forward in a one-on-one.

But while the Wolves goalkeeper came out on top in that personal tussle, his team came off second best in the afternoon’s bigger battle.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy:
“The referee put a block in on David Jones which impeded him for the first goal.

“When Marcus (Hahnemann) made the save, I would have liked one of my players to have the chance to get the rebound rather than be blocked by the ref.

“But I’ve got no problems with the sending off – it was not the most sane thing I’ve seen from Richard Stearman.”

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez:
“We looked very dangerous on the break and created good chances in the first half.

“It looked like it might be one of those days the way their keeper played – we’ve had a few occasions like that.

“But instead of feeling sorry for ourselves we showed maturity – it was a complete performance.”

McCarthy will have cash – Morgan

Filed under: Wolverhampton Wanderer by: admin

Wolves chairman and owner Steve Morgan says manager Mick McCarthy will get the money he needs as he looks to strengthen his squad in January.

Wolves have been linked with Hull winger Stephen Hunt and Morgan told BBC WM: “Mick has whatever funds he wants.

“But it’s not as easy as picking players off a shelf.

“The January window is more awkward than the summer and we’ve got a couple of bids out but other clubs are keen to hang onto their best players.”

Wolves, who are 15th in the Premier League and a point above the relegation zone, are yet to make any signings in January but have reportedly made a 3m bid for Hunt.

“We’ve targeted a couple of players we’d like to bring in and we’re talking,” Morgan said.

And he is adamant that the Black Country club will not overstretch itself despite the pressure to stay in the top flight.

“We have a wage budget and we set out to run this football club in a business-like manner but with ambition and it’s important to stick to that,” he said.

“We want sustainability not short-term gain for long-term pain.”

Please turn on JavaScript. Media requires JavaScript to play.

With Wolves facing Wigan on Saturday Morgan knows the picture at the bottom of the table could change very quickly over the next few weeks.

“The league’s a tight one this year and any team that has a few wins or a few defeats will be right at the top or bottom of that group.

“We’re doing okay. It’s a learning curve for everyone and we’ve got an important few games coming up.”

Wolves’ McCarthy waiting on bids

Filed under: Wolverhampton Wanderer by: admin

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has hinted that a new striker is his main target during the January transfer window.

“We would suffer here if we lost Kevin Doyle or Sylvan Ebanks-Blake,” he said.

“We’ve got bids in for players but we can’t do any business without someone else’s permission. You are reliant on people accepting them.”

Wolves are rumoured to be interested in Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford while McCarthy may return with a second offer for Hull winger Stephen Hunt.

But the former Republic of Ireland and Sunderland boss was unwilling to add Wolves to a growing list of suitors for Beckford.

“Us and how many others have been linked with Beckford? Do you think his agent might be working overtime?” said McCarthy.

Bolton and Newcastle have also been reported to be considering bids for the 26-year-old.

Hull may be convinced to part with Hunt, despite his five league goals this season, as chairman Adam Pearson looks to reduce the club’s wage bill.

Wolves’ hunt for attacking options has been hastened by injuries to forwards Andy Keogh and Stefan Maierhofer.

Keogh is ruled out until March with ankle ligament damage while Maierhofer is due to undergo an operation on a hernia this week.

Scotland international Chris Iwelumo has featured in each of the side’s last six games, but Sam Vokes, who has just returned from a loan spell at Leeds, is the most experienced of the remaining strikers.

Liverpool rule out Benayoun exit

Liverpool have dismissed claims that midfielder Yossi Benayoun will follow striker Andriy Voronin to Russian side Dinamo Moscow.

Dinamo sporting director Konstantin Sarsania had said a deal had been agreed for the 29-year-old Israeli international to join his club.

But Liverpool say Benayoun, who signed a new deal last summer to keep him at Anfield until 2013, is not leaving.

“The player is not for sale, it’s as simple as that,” said a club spokesman.

Benayoun, who joined from West Ham in summer 2007, is currently out of action because of a rib injury.

Wolverhampton 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool’s inconsistency returned with a vengeance as they were held to a draw by a valiant Wolves at Molineux.

The Reds, who beat Tottenham in their last game, lacked invention with Albert Riera missing a rare early opening.

Wolves striker Kevin Doyle had a poked goalbound shot deflected wide by defender Emiliano Insua as the home side created more clear-cut chances.

The Reds applied some late pressure but a resolute Wolves deservedly held on for a point.

With last Wednesday’s 2-0 win over fourth-placed Spurs under their belts, Liverpool were aiming to show signs their stuttering season had turned a corner.

But previous such victories so far this campaign have only seen them go round in circles of poor form, lack of confidence and the problem of failing to perform without key players.

And, even though inspirational captain Steven Gerrard was back for the Reds, they again flattered to deceive with Wolves keeper Marcus Hahnemann hardly called into any serious action.

Riera flashed a header across the Wolves goal as he could not to get enough purchase on his effort in order to send it goalwards, and the urgency with which Liverpool started the game quickly evaporated.

Instead, the home side quickly got into their stride after a sluggish start and, as they comfortably held the Reds at arm’s length, they almost took the lead.

A counter-attack saw left winger Matt Jarvis outpace Jamie Carragher and get in a low cross to the near post and, even though Doyle got to it first, his effort was deflected wide off Insua.

The threatening Jarvis was his side’s best attacking outlet and he drifted a cross to the far post, where Kevin Foley sent a header straight at keeper Pepe Reina from a tight angle.

Wolves have only scored 17 goals in 21 league games this season – the lowest in the Premier League for the present campaign – while Liverpool have struggled for away goals with 17 in as many games away from home in all competitions.

Liverpool’s problems at Molineux were as a result of a lack of invention as Gerrard and left-winger Riera lacked match sharpness, along with right winger Maxi Rodriguez, who was making his full Reds debut.

Riera did again go close when his mistimed volley almost looped under the crossbar before the alert Hahnemann saved.

The impressive workrate and 4-5-1 formation of Wolves also had plenty to do with them keeping Liverpool at bay, with the tough midfield tackling of Karl Henry and harrying of lone frontman Doyle a feature of the home side’s play.

As the game progressed, Wolves grew in confidence and Doyle sent a well-struck shot over.

Liverpool’s attacking midfielder Alberto Aquilani had to watch from the touchline as the visitors continued to be repelled by Wolves and had to settle for a draw.

Liverpool are now fifth and three points behind Tottenham but sixth-placed Manchester City are level with the Reds with two games in hand, while Wolves are fourth from bottom courtesy of a better goal difference than Burnley.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez:
“If you analyse the game, it was a fair result. In the first half, we were in control, although we didn’t create chances. The final pass in the final third was the difference.

“In the second half, they pushed harder. We still had some good counter-attacks but again the final pass was the difference. It was a fair result.”

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy on striker striker Kevin Doyle:
“If you see a better performance from a centre-forward than Doyle showed, I would like to see it. If he had just managed a goal, it would have been one of the best all-round performances.

“He is physically strong enough to play that role. We changed the system and I don’t think our keeper had a save to make. I don’t think we were troubled.

“It was a really solid performance and it’s great to get off 19 points because we’ve been there for too long.”

Benitez link to Juventus denied

Rafael Benitez’s agent insists the Liverpool boss is staying at Anfield, despite speculation linking him with a move to Serie A side Juventus.

Current manager Ciro Ferrara is under pressure because of Juve’s poor form.

However, Benitez’s agent Manuel Garcia Quilon said: “I have had no contact with Juventus or with any other Italian club regarding an interest on Rafa.”

Benitez signed a new deal in March 2009 that could keep him at the Merseyside club until 2014.

His agent added: “There have been rumours linking Rafa to Juve, just as there have been reports linking Guus Hiddink to Juve.

“They are all media speculation and there is no truth in it. Rafa has a four-year contract with Liverpool.

“He feels he has the strength to continue with the team and he is fully focused on guiding Liverpool up the standings.”

Liverpool and Juventus were knocked out of the Champions League before the winter break and lie sixth in their respective leagues.

Benitez’s side are 13 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester United, while last weekend’s 2-1 defeat by Roma was Juve’s fifth loss in six Serie A games and left them 16 points adrift of leaders Inter Milan.

Russia coach Hiddink was linked to Juve, who have been hit by injuries this season, before the loss to Roma and it led to Ferrara hitting out at the reports.

Meanwhile, Benitez, 49, came under fire after Liverpool were knocked out of the FA Cup by Championship side Reading earlier this month.

That defeat led former Reds captain Ronnie Whelan to say the Spaniard should be replaced.

But despite his side’s poor form, Benitez received the backing of Liverpool’s board.
