Records show Ahsan Ali Syed has failed to pay a county court judgement of 61,500. Other debts include 7,800 in unpaid rent and nearly 1,000 in unpaid council tax.

Mr Ali is also listed as director of two UK companies which were dissolved for non-compliance.

The businessman did not respond to the BBC’s request for comment.

Mr Ali lived in England between 2001 and 2005, saying he was here “enjoying family life”.

Companies House records show one of his earliest listed addresses was in Colchester, Essex. However, the owner of the property said that Mr Ali has had no connection with the address.

Congestion charge

Mr Ali did live in a rented flat in London’s West End. The letting agent, Abdur Karim Ali, said Mr Ali “was a very good tenant, very quiet, until 2004 and he started delaying paying his rent.”

Mr Ali suddenly vacated the London apartment in May 2005 owing approximately 7,800 in unpaid rent.

The letting agent said the man now hoping to buy Blackburn Rovers also left the flat littered with unopened mail and shredded documents.

“It was in a very, very bad condition. Everything was turned upside down.”

Mr Ali did not leave a forwarding address, and the agent said he had hired solicitors to try and track down his former tenant, but they could not find him.

The BBC has discovered that other parties were also seeking Mr Ali for unpaid debts.

Registry Trust records show that Mr Ali is yet to settle a 61,500 “unsatisfied” – or unpaid – county court judgement made against him in 2007. Specific details of this judgement are not known.

Other debts that appear to be outstanding include an unpaid London congestion charge fine. Bailiffs were also seeking Mr Ali for unpaid Council Tax totalling 932.25.

Dissolved companies

Mr Ali says he has assets of about $3bn (1.9bn) and the website of his Bahrain based company, Western Gulf Advisory, says he “plays a role in the management and the boards of over 133 companies worldwide”.

As far as Mr Ali’s UK business interests, the BBC could only find records linking him to two companies in London.

In 2001, he registered as a director of Grovebridge Investments. Five years later Companies House wrote to the company’s directors, asking if it was still trading because no returns had been submitted.

Grovebridge Investments Limited was struck off in September 2006.

Mr Ali was also a director of All Star Foods, which was dissolved in 2004 – again because no returns were filed.

According to information published by Mr Ali’s company, Western Gulf Advisory, he purchased a Canadian company between 2003 and 2004, for C$565,000 (352,000) and sold it 16 months later for C$8m.

When asked about his Canadian interests, Mr Ali told the BBC that he had two Canada-based businesses: Western Gulf Petroleum and Western Gulf Investments, which were founded in 2004/5.

Just as in Britain, official records show these companies were dissolved for failure to file returns.

‘Royal adviser’

Earlier this week, the BBC revealed that Mr Ali’s Bahrain based investment company, Western Gulf Advisory, was ordered to cease trading by the country’s Ministry of Industry and Commerce.

While the company initially denied the claims, Mr Ali has since been quoted as saying that he is co-operating fully with the authorities in the Middle Eastern state.

Mr Ali has stressed that it is not his Bahrain-based company that is leading the takeover bid, but his Swiss based firm, Western Gulf Advisory-AG and his takeover bid remains unaffected.

According to his company website, Mr Ali has been self-employed since the age of 16, following in the footsteps of his family, which has 150 years’ experience in private sector lending across Asia.

His company CV says Mr Ali’s expertise is highly recognised in the financial world and that he acts as adviser to royalty and many high net-worth individuals.

Mr Ali has told the BBC he hails from Bhongir, a town with a population of 50,000, near Hyderabad in India. It is here, he says, his family owned 900 acres of farm land, making their money through agriculture.

However, Joseph Antony who writes for The Hindu newspaper says that Mr Ali is seemingly an unknown figure in his hometown – surprising given his apparent wealth.

‘Responsibility’

He was told by a director working in the Government of Andhra Pradesh, that Mr. Ali’s name does not figure in any of the records pertaining to the Bhongir area.

Sources in Bahrain suggest that he is similarly unheralded in Bahrain’s financial circles.

Reports suggest that Mr Ali plans to invest 300m at Blackburn Rovers, who have fallen on hard times since winning the Premier League in 1995.

The club’s success was bankrolled by local tycoon, Jack Walker. In recent years, Rovers have been financed by a trust set up by Mr Walker before his death in 2000. The club is now rumoured to be 20m in debt.

A number of overseas investors have shown an interest in buying Rovers, but Mr Ali’s bid has made the greatest progress.

His representatives are currently examining the football club’s accounts, with a view to completing the buyout by the end of September.

Over the past week, the BBC has submitted repeated requests for an interview with Mr Ali, but was told he was unavailable for comment. Western Gulf Advisory also failed to respond to a request for a written statement.

A Blackburn Rovers Football Club spokesman said: “The club has been for sale for some time and, for it to remain competitive in one of the world’s toughest sporting competitions, we accept that new investment is required.

“Equally, the trustees of the late Jack Walker, who are being professionally advised, and the club’s board of directors are acutely aware of the responsibility involved in passing the club to a new owner.”

Walcott has X-ray on ankle injury

Arsenal winger Theo Walcott faces a spell on the sidelines after suffering an ankle injury in England’s 3-1 Euro 2012 qualifying win over Switzerland.

The 21-year-old was stretchered off after he was clipped by Yves Oehri in the build-up to Wayne Rooney’s opener for England after 10 minutes.

He was taken straight to hospital in Basle for an X-ray on his right ankle.

England manager Fabio Capello described the injury as “a little problem” but could not confirm its nature.

After the match, Capello said: “I spoke with Theo and he told me it is not a big problem.

“I said ‘two weeks’, he said less.”

The match was Walcott’s third international appearance following his controversial omission from England’s World Cup squad this summer.

Walcott had made a bright start before being injured a split second before Rooney handed England the lead, sweeping home Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson’s precise cross.

After the break, Walcott’s replacement Adam Johnson confidently slotted home England’s second before Xherdan Shaqiri blasted in from long-range to give the home side hope.

Substitute Darren Bent wrapped up victory for Capello’s side as they continued their 100% start to their qualifying campaign following their 4-0 victory over Bulgaria at Wembley on Friday.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will be anxiously waiting to hear the extent of Walcott’s injury as the casualty list mounts among his strikers.

Earlier on Tuesday, Wenger learnt that

Dutch striker Robin van Persie will be absent with an ankle problem until at least mid-October.

The Gunners are also without forward Nicklas Bendtner, who has a groin problem, while midfielder Samir Nasri is expected to return to training in the next few days after being absent since 15 August with a knee problem.

Arsenal suffer Van Persie setback

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie will be sidelined with an ankle injury until at least mid-October.

The Dutchman, 27, suffered the injury during Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Blackburn in the Premier League on 28 August.

The Netherlands Football Association had forecast he would be out for “at least a few weeks”, however, the problem is worse than first feared.

Van Persie missed five months last season after damaging ankle ligaments while on international duty.

His latest injury rules him out of Arsenal’s first two Champions League group stage matches, at home to Braga on 15 September and away to Partizan Belgrade 13 days later.

It seems likely he will miss a minimum of five Premier League matches, including the north London derby at Tottenham on 21 September and away to leaders Chelsea on 3 October.

The Dutch, meanwhile, will have to do without him for their Euro 2012 qualifiers against Moldova and Sweden next month, with Hamburg’s Ruud van Nistelrooy likely to continue to fill the striking breach in the squad.

Van Persie’s injury resulted in former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward Van Nistelrooy called up by the Netherlands for the first time in two years, as the 34-year-old came off the bench to score once in his country’s opening Group E qualifier on Friday – a 5-0 win over San Marino.

After missing much of last season through injury, Van Persie was an ever-present as the Netherlands reached the World Cup final this summer, but he has had a frustrating start to the current domestic campaign.

Lacking full match fitness, he made only brief appearances in Arsenal’s opening fixtures against Liverpool and Blackpool before his first start of the campaign was curtailed by injury after 35 minutes on Saturday.

Marouane Chamakh, who led the line after replacing Van Persie on Saturday, is likely to continue to play as Arsenal’s sole forward with Denmark international

Nicklas Bendtner also unavailable because of a groin injury.

There was better news for Gunners manager Arsene Wenger, though, on midfielder Samir Nasri.

The Frenchman injured his knee in the 1-1 league draw at Liverpool on 15 August. However, according to a statement on Arsenal’s website, Nasri “will return to training in the next few days”, after initially being expected to be ruled out for a month.

Terry and Lampard close to return

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard and defender John Terry could return from injury for Saturday’s game at West Ham.

Lampard needed surgery on his groin and Terry had a hamstring problem as both missed England’s Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland.

“Lampard had surgery and I think that he will start to train this week,” said Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti.

“Terry will start to train with the squad this week and I think he will be able to play against West Ham.”

Both players started against Stoke in Chelsea’s last outing on 28 August.

Ancelotti added: “We will see how Lampard trains and we will take a decision for the game against West Ham.

“Terry didn’t have surgery but he used the last week to improve his hamstring.”

Chelsea are top of the Premier League, having won all of their opening three fixtures this season and scoring 14 goals without conceding.

Ancelotti against media intrusion

Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti has spoken out against media intrusion into the lives of Premier League footballers.

Ancelotti told BBC London 94.9 that he was not concerned with his players off-field activities.

“I’m not interested in their private lives when it’s not involving our job. The media is too intrusive,” he said.

A number of Chelsea players have been in the media spotlight in the past year including defenders Ashley Cole and John Terry.

The Chelsea boss has defended his captain, Terry, and said that as long as events off the pitch do not affect performances on it, then he is happy.

Please turn on JavaScript. Media requires JavaScript to play.

He added: “I’m not interested in the private life of my players. John Terry was able to keep his private problem outside the training ground and for this reason he stayed captain.”

Ancelotti also revealed that his icy relationship with Jose Mourinho has thawed and they are now friend.

He said: “He was very kind when I won the Premier League. He sent me a message and now our relationship is different. We met in Geneva last week and had a good time together, and now he is a friend and things have changed.”

Hunt on target for October return

Filed under: Wolverhampton Wanderer by: admin

Stephen Hunt is on course to make his Wolves debut in October after manager Mick McCarthy confirmed the winger’s recovery from injury is on schedule.

Hunt, 29, suffered a broken foot whilst with former club Hull City in February.

McCarthy told the club website: “We’ve got five games coming up and then we get another international break.

“If we get him back after that and he was fit to start, that would be fantastic. I think he’s still on target to be ready in October.”

Hunt joined Wolves in June for an undisclosed fee from the Tigers, who were relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season.

Defender Steven Mouyokolo, who also joined Wolves from Hull in the summer, has resumed full training after picking up thigh and ankle injuries in pre-season.

And boss McCarthy has been further boosted by the news that Steven Fletcher and Jelle Van Damme should both be fit enough to face Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday after overcoming knocks.

Record signing Fletcher was withdrawn from the Scotland squad to face Liechtenstein on Tuesday to aid his recovery from a foot injury, which he sustained in Wolves’ opening-day victory over Stoke.

Meanwhile, Belgium defender Van Damme had been struggling with an ankle injury suffered in the same match, although he did start Wolves’ last Premier League game against Newcastle.

Houllier poised to take Villa job

Filed under: Aston Villa by: admin

Former Liverpool and Lyon boss Gerard Houllier is set to be appointed as Aston Villa’s new manager on Wednesday, BBC Sport understands.

The 63-year-old was interviewed for the job, along with caretaker boss Kevin McDonald and former Charlton and West Ham boss Alan Curbishley, last week.

Houllier will speak to French Football Federation officials before leaving his role as technical director.

But it is unclear who Houllier will appoint as his assistant at Villa Park.

Former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson, Houllier’s right-hand man during his time at Anfield, is one contender, while McDonald is also in the running.

French Football Federation president Fernando Duchaussoy said he will speak to Houllier when he returns from France’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo on Tuesday.

“I will meet Wednesday to take stock of the situation with him, I’ll ask him,” said Duchaussoy. “I would like to continue working with him.”

McDonald had been in charge at Villa Park since Martin O’Neill’s shock resignation in August, and is understood to have been the players’ first-choice to take over on a permanent basis.

O’Neill’s four-year reign ended five days before Villa’s Premier League opener at home to West Ham amid speculation the Northern Irishman was unhappy with budgets at the club and the lack of funds available to him.

McDonald has endured an uneven run of results since taking the reins. His side beat the Hammers and, last weekend, took three points at home to Everton.

However, the Villans were also thumped 6-0 at Newcastle and crashed out of the Europa League to Rapid Vienna.

Villa owner Randy Lerner is keen to have O’Neill’s full-time successor in place before the club’s next fixture – a league trip to Stoke on 13 September.

Houllier led Liverpool to the FA Cup, League Cup and Uefa Cup Treble in 2001.

After leaving the Merseysiders, he managed Lyon between 2005 and 2007, winning two league titles.

Houllier, whose other former clubs include Paris St Germain and Lens, is currently a technical director for the French Football Federation.

Sidwell on brink of Villa return

Filed under: Aston Villa by: admin

Aston Villa midfielder Steve Sidwell is hopeful of a return to first team action after playing the full 90 minutes for the reserves on Monday.

Sidwell, who has been out for a month with an Achilles injury, featured in the 4-0 victory over Blackpool.

He told the club website: “It was nice to be out there, it’s been a frustrating few weeks.

“Games are what you need. This was the first one back, I’ll just knuckle down in training and see where it goes.”

Sidwell enjoyed a good pre-season but was injured in Villa’s final friendly against Valencia at Villa Park on 6 August, eight days before the start of the Premier League season.

The former Reading and Chelsea player helped Villa to a comfortable victory against Blackpool at Bodymoor Heath, with a James Collins Jr brace and goals from Samir Carruthers and Michael Drennan sealing the win.

Injured Kuyt out for four weeks

Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt will be sidelined for four weeks after injuring his shoulder while on international duty with the Netherlands.

The 30-year-old suffered the injury while training for Tuesday’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Finland and returned to Liverpool for tests.

The Reds club doctor Peter Brukner confirmed: “He is likely to be out for four weeks.

“Dirk has damaged the A-C joint between the collar bone and shoulder.”

Kuyt injured his shoulder after falling awkwardly at the ADO Den Hague stadium.

The Dutchman scored from the penalty spot in the Netherlands’ 5-0 victory over San Marino in their opening Group E match on Friday, but his only goal for Liverpool so far this season came in the 2-1 win at Trabzonspor in the Uefa Cup.

He had been linked with a move to Inter Milan, managed by old boss Rafael Benitez, but after the Trabzonspor game the striker

pledged his future to the Reds.

Bebe makes Champions League squad

Filed under: Manchester United by: admin

New signing Bebe has been included in Manchester United’s 25-man Champions League squad but injured midfielder Owen Hargreaves did not make the cut.

It was originally thought that 20-year-old Portuguese forward Bebe had missed out but Uefa has confirmed he features.

Hargreaves, 29, has made only a solitary substitute appearance in the last two years for Manchester United as he battles tendinitis.

Hargreaves and Bebe were both named in United’s 25-man Premier League squad.

Uefa rules allow clubs to name 25 players for the forthcoming group stages of the Champions League.

If United qualify from the group stages – the club’s last Group C game is at home to Valencia on 7 December – they can then name a new squad of players for the knockout stages.

Bebe’s exclusion from United’s initial Champions League squad would have raised eyebrows as he only joined in August from Vitoria de Guimaraes at a cost of over 7m.

Hargreaves underwent knee surgery in the United States in 2008 in a bid to solve his long-term tendinitis problem.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has said the England midfielder “continues to battle for full fitness”, but Hargreaves’ exclusion from the Champions League squad suggests the manager does not expect him to make a full return much before Christmas.

The former Bayern Munich player, who joined Manchester United in 2007 in a 17m deal, played several reserve matches towards the end of last season and came on as a late substitute in United’s 1-0 win over Sunderland in the penultimate game of the season on 2 May.

But the Canadian-born midfielder was hit by an injury setback in July and returned to the US to see a specialist over the injury.

Under new rules introduced this season all clubs in the Premier League must submit a squad with a maximum of 25 players and containing eight home-grown players.

And the duo’s selection in the latter was arguably a formality as all senior players at the club – excluding those out on loan – were registered.
