Sinclair & Rodgers on Burnley win

Scott Sinclair’s early goal ended Burnley’s unbeaten run in a game that saw both sides reduced to 10 men.

Alan Tate’s superb run and cross from the right set up big-money summer signing Sinclair, who scooped in his second goal in two games.

Nathan Dyer nearly gave Stephen Dobbie a second as Swansea dominated the half.

Darren Pratley, already controversially booked for diving, saw red for a tackle on Tyrone Mears, who was sent off two minutes later for a lunge at Dyer.

The Clarets now have just one win from their last 24 away matches, and have lost 18 of their last 21 on the road.

The omens were not good for the visitors as Tate headed wide inside the opening five minutes after meeting a David Cotterill free-kick.

After Sinclair’s goal and Dobbie’s near miss, Swansea continued to dominate and were fortunate not to double their advantage when Pratley’s 12-yard strike clipped the top of the crossbar.

Martin Paterson tested Dorus De Vries from 25 yards at the other end in a rare Burnley attack.

Paterson went close again from distance on the half-hour mark before Sinclair fired at Brian Jensen from just outside the penalty area.

Chris Iwelumo failed to hit the target with a close-range header from Graham Alexander’s cross – and the former Wolves star and Dean Marney spurned further chances for the visitors just before the interval.

The lively Cotterill blazed over from 25 yards after the restart and Pratley tried his luck from distance to no avail.

Dyer and Sinclair combined again to allow the latter a sight at goal, only for the former Chelsea trainee to fire wide.

Two red cards in the space of as many minutes then changed the complexion of the game.

Pratley was first to go, then Mears received his marching orders for a second yellow after clattering Dyer.

Steven Thompson replaced Paterson and almost hauled the sides level within four minutes of being introduced.

Danny Fox crossed and Thompson saw his six-yard header saved by De Vries.

Jack Cork, on loan at Turf Moor from Chelsea, rifled over from 30 yards as Burnley searched for an equaliser and Thompson shot wide from a similar range during a frantic finish.

Andrea Orlandi went close at the opposite end and Ross Wallace crashed over a 25-yard free-kick, but the Swans hung on to take all three points.

“I thought that both sendings off were very, very harsh,” Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers told BBC Sport Wales.

“Everyone knows that Darren is a really honest player and he wouldn’t have gone down [in the box for his first booking] unless he really had to.

“I haven’t seen it again, but I thought it was a penalty, so for him to get booked then for that to cost him a red card? it’s very, very disappointing.

“I also thought the second red card was harsh on Mears – it wasn’t that sort of game.”

Burnley boss cautious on signings

Burnley manager Brian Laws says he will only bring in new players before the transfer window closes if any of his current squad are injured in training.

The Clarets have so far recruited five players during the summer.

“It’s always on a day-to-day basis whether we need to make changes or not,” Laws told BBC Radio Lancashire.

“But I would never say we’re not going to do anything because if anything happens in training over the next few days I will look at things then.”

Chris Iwelumo, Ross Wallace, Dean Marney and Lee Grant all joined the Clarets on permanent deals during the summer.

Chelsea midfielder Jack Cork also returned to Turf Moor on a season-long loan after impressing during a spell with the club last season.

And with the emergency-loan window opening a week after the main transfer window closes, Laws says there is less urgency to bring in new signings before 1800 BST on Tuesday.

“The transfer area that we were going to work in certainly doesn’t close for us,” said the former Scunthorpe and Sheffield Wednesday boss. “We are looking at it on a regular basis to see what our needs are.

“The end of the window is more of a countdown scenario for certain satellite TV companies. They try to make it as difficult as possible for managers but more exciting for supporters because they want to see clubs spending money.

“But it’s part and parcel of the game now and we get used to it. The only thing it does increase is agents and I really wish I could stop my phone from ringing because it is generally agents telling you what great players they’ve got available, but I just take it all with a pinch of salt.”

Burnley’s trip to Swansea’s Liberty Stadium will be live from 1500 BST on BBC Radio Lancashire on Saturday.

New Burnley contract for Eagles

Burnley midfielder Chris Eagles has agreed to sign a new two-year deal with the club.

The announcement ends speculation linking the 24-year-old former Manchester United player with a move to Celtic or Rangers.

Clarets boss Brian Laws said: “That’s great news for the fans and the club because clearly he has the talent.

“He’s taking on board what we are asking of him. He wants to stay at Burnley and that’s good enough for us.”

Carling Cup

Carling Cup second round
Venue: Globe Arena Date: Tuesday, 24 August Kick-off: 1945 BST
Coverage: BBC Sport website, BBC Radio 5 live, BBC local radio & highlights on The League Cup Show

Morecambe boss Sammy McIlroy has no new injury or suspension concerns ahead of the visit of Burnley.

Defender Will Haining could be available again after missing Saturday’s 3-2 defeat at Burton to be with his wife after she gave birth.

Burnley defender David Edgar is available for selection after sitting out Saturday’s 3-0 win over Leicester through suspension.

But defender Michael Duff remains sidelined with a calf injury.

Head-to-head

This is the first-ever meeting between Morecambe and Burnley.

Morecambe

Morecambe were one of eight lower-division clubs to beat Championship opposition in the first round. They beat Coventry 2-0 in the first competitive match to be staged at their new home, the Globe Arena.

The triumph over the Sky Blues is their only victory in four league and cup outings so far this season.

Victory would equal the Shrimps’ most successful run in the competition in 2007, when they beat Preston and Wolves before losing to Sheffield United in the third round.

Burnley

As the highest ranked clubs last season, Burnley and Hull were the only Championship sides to get a bye into the second round.

Burnley reached the semi-finals for the fourth time in their history in the season before last.

The Clarets need to score three times to take their all-time total of League Cup goals to 250.

Burnley 3-0 Leicester

Burnley continued their impressive start to the Championship season with a comprehensive victory over Leicester.

Both sides pressed early on but Burnley were soon on top and Andre Bikey had a header disallowed before Ross Wallace’s strike deflected in off Joao Moreno.

After the break, Chris Iwelumo nodded the 100th goal of his career from Wallace’s hanging cross.

And Graham Alexander crowned the win with a penalty after Chris Eagles was brought down by Michael Lamey.

Having beaten much-fancied Nottingham Forest on the opening day of the season and drawn at Ipswich last time out, it was another impressive result for Burnley following last season’s relegation from the Premier League.

But goalkeeper Brian Jensen had to come to their rescue in the opening minute when he beat away Danny N’Guessan’s shot after the Foxes winger had tricked his way into the box.

Burnley thought they had gone ahead in the fifth minute, but Bikey’s thumping header was chalked off by referee Geoff Eltringham, who ruled Clark Carlisle had pulled Moreno’s shirt in the build-up.

Martin Paterson almost headed in for the hosts and Leicester’s DJ Campbell fizzed a strike just over before Wallace claimed his first goal for the Clarets since his summer switch from Preston.

Leicester came out fighting after the break but Burnley had the better chances and, after Iwelumo failed to hit the target with a header from close range, the former Wolves forward nodded home his second goal in as many games.

Making his 900th club career start, Alexander then sealed the points with a side-footed finish from the spot.

Goalkeeper Penny in Burnley exit

Burnley keeper Diego Penny has left the Championship club by mutual consent.

The 26-year-old Peru international signed from Coronel Bolognesi in 2008 but made just four appearances, including one in the Premier League.

He told the club website: “I will never forget Burnley because it was a great step up for me.

“It didn’t happen for me but I do think I pushed Brian [Jensen, first-choice keeper] to be the best he could and Burnley have benefited from that.”

Penny added: “I am sad I didn’t play more times. I think in football the most important thing is playing regularly but I tried to do my best every single day.”

Ipswich 1-1 Burnley

Clarke Carlisle salvaged a point for 10-man Burnley as a dramatic late header denied Ipswich victory.

When Jon Stead headed a corner from Colin Healy into the danger area four minutes from time, David Norris was on hand to flick Ipswich ahead.

Minutes earlier, Burnley defender David Edgar, who had already been booked, had been sent off for a trip on Norris.

But in the dying moments Carlisle rose to head home a corner from Burnley captain Graham Alexander.

It was a moment which underlined the need for Ipswich boss Roy Keane, who is keen to add to his squad, to bring in reinforcements if his side are to challenge for promotion this year.

Keane handed a debut to Andros Townsend, the Spurs winger brought in on loan two days ago, but club captain Jon Walters was omitted from the squad amid speculation linking him with a move to Stoke.

In Walters’ absence, Ipswich forward Tamas Priskin fired over before Townsend capped a mazy run by screwing a shot wide.

Nevertheless, it was Burnley who came closest to an early opener.

With 25 minutes gone, Alexander and Dean Marney combined in midfield to release the overlapping Ross Wallace down the left flank.

Wallace surged into the area before picking out Wade Elliott, but his shot was tipped over by Ipswich keeper Marton Fulop.

Keane withdrew midfielder Grant Leadbitter at the break in favour of Healy, but it was not until Martin Paterson flicked a header narrowly wide of the home team’s goal that Ipswich were sparked into second-half life.

Stead’s low cross-shot was hacked off the line by Edgar, but with 11 minutes remaining the defender saw red for a trip on Norris.

And it was Norris who finally broke the deadlock with four minutes to go, setting the scene for Carlisle’s dramatic late intervention.

Npower Championship

Npower Championship
Venue: Portman Road Date: Saturday, 14 August Kick-off: 1500 BST
Coverage: BBC Sport website, BBC Radio 5 live, BBC local radio & highlights on The Football League Show

Ipswich defender Gareth McAuley is set to miss out with a back injury, while winger Carlos Edwards has been sidelined by a groin problem.

Mark Kennedy sustained a hamstring injury on his debut and could miss out.

Burnley, who are without Chris McCann (knee), are expected to include Jack Cork after re-signing the midfielder on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

Defender Michael Duff is nursing a calf injury, so Clarke Carlisle is likely to the start for the Clarets.

Four of the last five meetings between these clubs have ended in draws – including the last three at Portman Road – and Ipswich drew an amazing 20 matches last season.

But their days of being the Championship’s draw specialists could be over. Having made a dismal start a year ago, they were straight out of the blocks this time around and stormed to a fine 3-1 win at promotion favourites Middlesbrough.

It is eight years since Ipswich won both of their opening two league matches of the season. Beating Burnley would be a major boost for a side that took so long to get going last term, and failed to register a win against any of the three teams that had gone down from the Premier League.

Burnley’s hopes of an immediate return to the top flight could depend on how well they travel. The Clarets lost their first five away matches last season, and claimed only one point out of 48 on the road before managing to beat Hull in April.

Head-to-head

Burnley’s only win at Ipswich was a 1-0 triumph in January 1970.

Ipswich

Ipswich are hoping to win their first home match of a Championship campaign for the first time in three years.

Town, who beat Exeter 3-2 in the Carling Cup, have scored a total of six goals in their first two games of the season.

Burnley

Burnley last won their first away league match of the season in 2006.

Chris Eagles is in line for his 100th league start.

Cork completes Burnley loan move

Burnley have re-signed midfielder Jack Cork on a season-long loan from Premier League side Chelsea.

Cork, 23, has returned to Turf Moor as a replacement for Chris McCann who will be out for six months after undergoing a cruciate knee ligament operation.

“I am absolutely delighted to get him back into the football club,” manager Brian Laws told BBC Radio Lancashire.

“There’s been a number of clubs courting him this summer but we’ve got a great player on our hands.”

Cork made 11 appearances for Burnley last season in his first spell with the club, scoring his only goal in the 4-2 win over Tottenham on the final day of the campaign.

But following the Clarets’ relegation from the Premier League Cork returned to parent-club Chelsea.

Although he has still to make a first-team appearance for the London side since joining as a trainee in 2006, Cork has had loan spells with a number of clubs before moving to Turf Moor in February.

“We know he’s a good quality player,” said Laws. “He’s hungry and had a great experience with us last year.

“It’s been the main objective for us to try and get him in as soon as we possibly can, although it’s been a very long process. We’ve had to be very patient because Jack’s tasted the Premier League and we knew that if any club came in for him we’d have no chance.

Laws admitted he would have been interested in bringing the England U21 international to Turf Moor even if Chris McCann had been fit.

“We’re not just talking about the short-term, but the long-term future as well,” he said. “Jack’s one of those players that he’s such a young age that there’s plenty more to come and we’d like to have a piece of that.

“We decided to just step back and speak to Jack on a regular basis and keep us informed. But now we’ve got a decision where we could no longer hold out on Chris [McCann] because of the surgery required the timing is right to bring him back.”

There will be full commentary on BBC Radio Lancashire on Ipswich v Burnley from 1500 BST on Saturday.

Burnley’s McCann out for months

Burnley midfielder Chris McCann will be out for a minimum of six months following major knee surgery.

McCann managed just seven Premier League games last season due to two lengthy lay-offs through knee injuries.

Boss Brian Laws told the club website: “Chris has had niggles consistently over a period of time and it got to a point where we needed a second opinion.

“[That opinion is that] he needs a full reconstruction of the cruciate ligament. It’s devastating news.”
