Yobo completes Fenerbahce switch

Everton defender Joseph Yobo has joined Turkish side Fenerbahce on loan.

The 29-year-old, who has made more than 250 appearances for Everton since joining in 2002, passed a medical and agreed personal terms on Wednesday.

Fenerbahce will have the option of signing the player on a permanent basis at the end of the campaign.

Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin are Everton’s first choice centre-backs, while John Heitinga and Jack Rodwell are also able to play in that position.

Yobo, who captained Nigeria at the World Cup this summer, has not featured for the Toffees this season.

The 29-year-old played down reports that he was forced out of Goodison Park, saying that his desire for regular football was the reason for the move.

“I’m a fighter, I hate to sit on the bench and get paid,” Yobo told BBC Sport.

“As a professional footballer I want to be on the pitch as long as I am fit to play.

“I spoke with the coach [David Moyes] and he understood my position.

“It was better for both parties that I seek first team football elsewhere.”

Yobo also spoke highly of Moyes who signed him during his first full season in charge of the Toffees.

“I have never had any problems with the coach, he is great man and I am a professional footballer fired up by challenges,” he said.

However, a reported bust-up with Moyes following his decision to travel for the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations in January saw him slip down the pecking order at the club.

He insisted though, that there are no bad feelings attached to his departure from Everton.

“Everton will always be in my heart, the supporters, players, chairman and everyone at the club were always brilliant with me,” he said.

“I leave knowing there is always a reunion in the future but the chance of playing in Turkey is very exciting.

“Fenerbahce provides another challenge for me and I want to give everything to the club during my time here.”

“They have a very good project, a fantastic fan base and talented players and I hope to bring my experience and ability into the project here.”

Yobo’s contract with Everton runs until 2014.

Fifa dashes Arteta’s England hope

Mikel Arteta’s hopes of playing for England look likely to end in failure because of a little known Fifa rule.

Born in Spain, the 28-year-old Everton midfielder had hoped to qualify for England after completing five years residency in the United Kingdom.

However, because Arteta has played for Spain at junior level, he would have had to have held a British passport at the same time in order to be eligible.

“Our understanding is he is ineligible to play,” say the Football Association.

Article 18.1.a within the Fifa statutes outlines that any player who has represented their country in an official competition, at whatever level, would at that time need to have held a passport for the country they later wish to play for in order to be permitted to make the switch.

Arteta played for Spain in the Under-16 European Championships and then in the FIFA World Championships at Under-17 level.

Areteta joined Everton on loan in 2005 from Real Sociedad in Spain before signing permanently a year later. He also had a two-year spell at Rangers and started his career at Barcelona.

Only last month Arteta, who has never played for Spain at senior level, said he would consider a call-up to play for England.

Earlier this week, the FA stressed they had not been asked to investigate the matter by England manager Fabio Capello, although it was thought the England coach had spoken briefly to Arteta.

Man Utd game ‘must-win’ – Arteta

Everton’s Mikel Arteta says their clash with Manchester United is a “must win game” after the Toffees’ poor start to the Premier League season.

They go into this weekend’s international break with just one point from three games and face United at Goodison Park on 11 September.

“It’s a must-win for us now,” Arteta told BBC Radio Merseyside.

“We can’t drop points at home and we know how important it is to get some consistency at Goodison Park.”

The 28-year-old midfielder added: “We’re now looking to prepare, rest some players, hope the international players get back fresh and start winning.

“To be honest, we’re not happy with the start of the season. We wanted to start bright and we wanted to start winning.

“We haven’t done it and it puts more pressure on us because we want to get our first three points.”

Arteta pick not possible – Levein

LITHUANIA v SCOTLAND – European Championship Qualifier
Venue: Darius Girenas Stadium, Kaunas Date: Friday, 3 September Kick-off: 1915 BST Coverage: BBC ONE Scotland, BBC Radio Scotland and BBC Sport website

Scotland manager Craig Levein does not believe Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta is eligible for his side, or England.

The Spanish former Rangers star qualifies for UK citizenship, having lived in England since 2005, and has said he would consider a call-up.

However, Levein said: “As far as I’m aware, the rules are that he has to be educated (in UK) for five years. The home associations have an agreement.”

Levein went on to say that he would like those eligibility rules changed.

“I want the rules for Scotland to be the same as everywhere else in the world,” added the former Dundee United boss.

“I have no objections if people qualify, I will play them. My job is not to look at where these guys come from, my job is to try to win football matches.

“If anybody is available and I think they will do a job for the team, I will pick them.”

A gentleman’s agreement among the Home Nations specifies that to qualify for an international call-up you must either have been born in the country, have a parent or grandparent born in the country or have spent five years in education in the country before the age of 18.

In June, the wording of the agreement was altered to “engaged in a minimum of five years’ education under the age of 18 within the territory of the relevant association”, which allows Scotland to pick Hearts’ English-born winger Andrew Driver.

When asked about the possibility of approaching Arteta, 28, Levein said: “I’m sure (Everton manager) David Moyes has given him a good footballing education but I don’t think that counts.

“Andrew Driver had to qualify and he stayed in Scotland for 10 years. He is eligible for two countries, England and Scotland, the Scotland one because of his five years of continuous education.

“As far as I’m aware, Mikel Arteta cannot play for England.”

For the forthcoming European Championship qualifying double-header against Lithuania and Lichtenstein Levein has handed a first-call up to Blackpool goalkeeper Matt Gilks, who qualifies through a Scottish grandparent

And Levein insists he will continue to cast his net far and wide in the search for players who will improve his squad.

“We wrote to every agent in England asking them to let us know if any of their players had Scottish parents or grandparents or were born in Scotland,” he revealed.

“We had some responses, Matt being one of those. Most of the other boys we’ve had have been younger players. I’m sure there are other players we haven’t discovered and we will keep trying.

“In all honesty, I don’t think Matt will be involved but I’d like to get him in and let him experience the international arena and train with the guys.”

Aston Villa 1-0 Everton

Everton were condemned to their worst league start for more than a decade by an Aston Villa side who were lucky to keep the visitors at bay at Villa Park.

The hosts took an early lead when Ashley Young freed marauding full-back Luke Young for a fine left-foot finish.

Everton’s Steven Pienaar hit the bar soon after while from Mikel Arteta’s smart free-kick Jack Rodwell glanced a second-half header just inches wide.

Both sides could have scored in a breathless finish but Villa clung on.

The result leaves Everton still searching for a first league win of the season, despite controlling most of the match against a Villa side who ground out a crucial win at an unsettling time for the Midlands club.

McDonald unsure on Villa boss situation

Both teams needed a positive showing after difficult starts to this campaign, but Villa – for whom Kevin MacDonald is still the caretaker manager after Martin O’Neill’s shock exit – were dealt a blow before kick-off as new signing Stephen Ireland got injured in the warm-up.

Nigel Reo-Coker was duly drafted into the starting line-up but the hosts were immediately on the back foot as Everton settled well and threatened menacingly down the left through Leighton Baines.

Yet the Toffees were made to pay a high price when the statuesque Marouane Fellaini catastrophically slipped outside his own penalty area in the seventh minute.

Villa pounced instantly with Ashley Young calmly slotting a fine short pass towards the gap which Young cleverly sprinted in to and his finish, curling the ball high past goalkeeper Tim Howard from 16 yards out with his weaker left foot, was unerring.

Jermaine Beckford, Everton’s bargain summer buy from Leeds United, is yet to score in the league for his new club but his pace caused Richard Dunne to receive a booking after the Villa defender crudely hacked him down after a tricky run.

Largely dictating the play despite that early setback, the visitors nearly scored in the 17th minute when Baines jabbed a nicely-weighted pass inside for Steven Pienaar who curved the ball casually out of Brad Freidel’s reach but against the bar.

Though Everton dominated possession, the fine link-up play down the left between Pienaar and Baines asked real questions of Villa right-winger Marc Albrighton – and though he was perhaps naive defensively, the 20-year-old showed real promise going forward.

That was evident as he wriggled free to lash a decent shot just past Howard’s post, though McDonald’s side would have been relieved to get to the interval with their 1-0 lead intact.

The hosts started an open second half with greater nous, causing Everton boss David Moyes to replace quiet striker Beckford with the vastly more experienced Louis Saha after 55 minutes.

The Merseysiders were briefly forced on the back foot as Villa settled into a pattern of counter-attacking football, with John Carew muscling his way into the box to force Howard into a double save from Ashley Young after a brilliant block from Phil Jagielka.

Seconds later Howard’s American counterpart Freidel made a superb instinct stop from Felliani’s snap shot on the turn before Rodwell glanced Arteta’s dangerous free-kick just wide of the post.

Villa did have a chance to extend their lead after Jagielka slipped when Reo-Coker was well placed to put Gabriel Agbonlahor, who had replaced Carew after 67 minutes, in the clear.

Defeat hard to take – Moyes

But Ireland’s replacement hit a woeful pass into the recovering England international, who managed to clear with ease.

Again Villa fluffed their lines when, following Howard’s desperate parry from Ashley Young’s swivel-hipped run and shot, Albrighton hacked the ball wildly over the bar with time and space.

And Everton nearly equalised after a brilliantly incisive run down down the right from Seamus Coleman – who had replaced the injured Rodwell – but nobody was on hand to apply what could have been a simple finish.

The hosts sat deep inviting pressure on to them, but the Toffees huffed and puffed to no avail with Saha hitting a clear late chance into the body of Friedel – when a low shot would have troubled him more – before the Villa keeper once again denied him brilliantly.

The three points leaves Villa above Everton in the table and in much better health as they seek to appoint a permanent manager – be it McDonald or otherwise.

Aston Villa caretaker manager Kevin MacDonald:

“[Club owner Randy Lerner] has put no pressure on me but I will probably speak to him on Monday or Tuesday at the latest about whether I wish to be considered for the job.

“I’ve enjoyed being able to organise things but I still don’t know if it is for me or not.

“I will now have the chance to collate everything that has happened in the past two weeks and I’ve got to believe I’m good enough myself. That is what I will think about.”

Everton boss David Moyes:

“For us not to have got all the points, never mind one, is hard.

“We must get better at scoring goals, but our play all round is very good. We certainly didn’t play badly today.

“My players are playing really well at the moment actually. We just haven’t quite got enough at the final end of the pitch to make a difference.”

Everton 5-1 Huddersfield

Everton reached the Carling Cup third round with victory over Huddersfield.

Marouane Fellaini headed Everton into the lead and Jack Rodwell drilled in to make it 2-0 before Johnny Heitinga nodded into his own goal.

Jermaine Beckford added Everton’s third from the spot before Huddersfield’s Lee Peltier was shown a second yellow for fouling Seamus Coleman in the box.

Heitinga missed the penalty, but Louis Saha made no mistake with his 18-yard shot and Leon Osman headed in a fifth.

Beckford’s strike was his first for the club in three appearances since his summer signing from Leeds.

He nearly scored a second, but saw his shot tipped over by substitute keeper Ian Bennett, who replaced Alex Smithies at half-time.

England Under-21 international Rodwell, recalled by Everton boss David Moyes, also looked threatening.

The 19-year-old scored a great goal when his smart drag-back was followed by a low strike into the bottom corner.

Rodwell also won Everton their first penalty when he was brought down by Damien Johnson.

Huddersfield hit the woodwork twice in the first half, first when Lee Croft struck the foot of the post from a Gary Naysmith cross, and the second when Joey Gudjonsson’s delivery bounced off Gary Roberts and hit the bar.

Everton 1-1 Wolves

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake’s side-foot finish earned Wolves a deserved point against Everton at Goodison Park.

The Toffees dominated the first half and were rewarded when Tim Cahill turned and fired them into the lead following a Mikel Arteta free-kick.

But Wolves showed greater attacking intent after the break and Ebanks-Blake put them level with 16 minutes to go.

Summer signing Jermaine Beckford was a peripheral figure for Everton, who were left to rue a number of missed chances.

They could have little complaint about the result, but in the first 45 minutes the home midfield brimmed with purpose; Steven Pienaar and Diniyar Bilyaletdinov ran with intent, Arteta was typically neat as playmaker and Cahill was his usual bustling self.

Moyes disappointed after draw with Wolves

However, Wolves were in stubborn mood, keeping men behind the ball to try and neutralise opponents boss Mick McCarthy described as their toughest of last season.

Cahill’s strike forced them to re-think their approach after the interval and their greater ambition ultimately paid off.

Prior to Cahill’s goal, Everton’s best opportunities saw Bilyaletdinov miscue from 12 yards and Wolves keeper Marcus Hahnemann tip over a superb 25-yard drive from Dutch defender Johnny Heitinga.

But timing is everything and in Cahill, Everton possess a midfield goalscorer with the knack of arriving on cue and he rendered protests over whether a foul on Arteta was inside or outside the box irrelevant by stealing the ball from George Elokobi after the Spaniard’s free-kick had hit the Wolves wall and firing into the roof of the net.

Wolves had no option but to adjust their game-plan and while they created little of note immediately after the interval, they grew in stature and confidence as uncertainty crept into the home side’s play as they struggled to add to their lead.

Beckford, who was drafted into their starting line-up after a largely toothless display in last weekend’s 1-0 loss at Blackburn, failed to make an impact and the former Leeds man was withdrawn after 70 minutes.

Second-half display pleases McCarthy

Ebanks-Blake had been similarly anonymous but he remained on the pitch for Wolves and when a chance to stamp his mark on the game finally arrived, he did not waste it.

Adlene Guedioura won the ball in midfield and drove on into Everton territory before feeding Kevin Doyle on the right and his cross was side-footed into the net with ease by Ebanks-Blake from six yards out.

Everton pushed for a winner late on – bringing on Leon Osman and Marouane Fellaini – but a header from Beckford’s replacement Louis Saha which landed on the roof of the net was the best they had to show for their efforts.

Everton manager David Moyes:

“I thought we played very well in the first half and arguably should have gone in more than one goal up.

“Wolves put us under a lot more pressure and made it harder for us in the second half.

“We’re disappointed that we’ve not done better with our start to the season.”

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy:

“We were abject first half and held on 43 minutes. I take responsibility for that because I tinkered with the team to stop Everton playing.

“Second half I addressed that. I said to them, show me I don’t need to make substitutions.

“I thought it was a well-earned point in the end. I might take credit for that if I take the criticism for the first half.”

Arteta would consider playing for England

Everton’s Spanish-born midfielder Mikel Arteta says he would consider a call-up to play for England.

The 28-year-old former Rangers player has been resident in England since joining Everton from Real Sociedad in 2005, earning him British citizenship.

“If one day the opportunity comes obviously I would have to consider it very seriously,” Arteta told BBC Sport.

Despite impressing in the Premier League, Arteta has never played an international game for Spain.

England coach Fabio Capello was in the stands at Goodison Park to see Arteta play for Everton in the 1-1 draw with Wolves, during which the midfielder showed sparks of the creativity that has made him so important to David Moyes’ side.

When asked about the possibility of England selection Arteta replied: “I don’t know what his [Capello's] thoughts are.

“I know some people have been talking about it, but I haven’t said anything yet because the offer is not there at the moment.”

Arteta is not the only native Spaniard plying his trade in the Premier league who is open to the prospect of a call-up to Capello’s national squad.

Arsenal’s Spanish goalkeeper Manuel Almunia revealed that he had not ruled out the possibility of a representing England, where he has been a resident since joining the Gunners from Celta Vigo in 2004.

Both Almunia and Arteta have a tough task breaking their way into the World Cup-winning Spain squad.

Almunia faces competition from Real Madrid keeper Iker Casillas and Liverpool’s Pepe Reina, while Arteta would need to battle his way into one of the strongest midfields in world football, in which even Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas does not figure regularly.

After being sidelined for a year between February 2009 and February 2010 with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, Arteta has since returned to the Everton side and excelled in their midfield.

At Goodison Park on Saturday, Tim Cahill rewarded Everton for their first half superiority by giving them a half-time lead but Wolves improved after the break and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake earned the visitors a deserved draw.

“We should have taken our chances early in the game,” said Arteta. “With only one goal lead you always risk conceding a goal.

“I thought we controlled the game and did enough to earn the three points but Wolves got a goal on the counter-attack and took two points away from us.”

It means Everton are still without a victory this season after their 1-0 opening day defeat at Blackburn.

“Two games and only one point is not good enough for us,” added Arteta. “We need to start winning and getting points because there are big teams ahead of us who are winning.”

Everton captain Phil Neville has a foot injury and is a slight doubt for the Premier League match against Wolves.

Striker Victor Anichebe is unlikely to feature after having an injection to try to ease a knee problem.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has fitness concerns over Steven Fletcher (foot), Jelle Van Damme (ankle) and Steven Mouyokolo (hamstring).

However, last season’s top scorer Kevin Doyle is hoping to return to action following a calf injury.

Everton

Doubtful: Anichebe (knee), Neville (foot)

Wolves

Doubtful: Doyle (calf), Fletcher (foot), Mouyokolo (hamstring), Van Damme (ankle)

Injured: Edwards (groin), Hunt (foot), Kightly (knee)

Everton will be thankful for home comforts when Goodison Park hosts its first match of the new season. David Moyes’s side only lost twice at home last term, beating Chelsea and Manchester United along the way, and will be keen to recapture that kind of form following their opening-day defeat at Blackburn.

The Toffees lost three of their first four league games last season and cannot afford another slip-up so early in the season if they harbour realistic ambitions of mounting a serious top-four challenge.

It is 31 years since Wolves last won at Goodison Park, although they came close last season when they were denied by Diniyar Bilyaletdinov’s 88th-minute equaliser.

Wolves kicked-off the new season with an impressive 2-1 win over Stoke, with summer signings Jelle van Damme and Steven Fletcher particularly impressive. The club spent around 16m in the summer in an attempt to build on last season’s 15th-placed finish, and manager Mick McCarthy will be looking for an improvement in his side’s away form as they seek to establish themselves as a Premier League force.

Head-to-head

These two founding members of the Football League first met in January 1889, with Wolves winning 5-0 at home.

Wolves last won at Goodison Park in September 1979, when goals from Andy Gray, Peter Daniel (pen) and John Richards gave them a 3-2 win.

They have met on 126 previous occasions. Everton have won 58, Wolves 44 and there have been 24 draws.

Everton

Everton’s opening-day defeat to Blackburn ended an 11-game unbeaten run.

The Toffees are attempting to avoid successive Premier League defeats for the first time in 26 games.

Tim Howard will be making his 150th Premier League appearance for the club.

Wolves

Wolves had not won on the opening day of a season for 11 years before the 2-1 home victory against Stoke last weekend.

Wolves managed just four away wins last season.

Matt Jarvis will be hoping to make his 200th career league appearance.

Celtic eye Everton defender Yobo

BBC Scotland has learned that Celtic are interested in signing the Everton defender Joseph Yobo on a season-long loan deal.

The Nigerian centre back, 29, has been at Goodison Park since 2002.

The Glasgow club have been made aware that the player could become available but wages may be the stumbling block.

Meanwhile, Celtic are also still interested in signing Republic of Ireland keeper Shay Given on loan but the deal is looking unlikely.

Everton manager David Moyes would not comment on the possibility of Yobo leaving but claimed there have been no overtures from his former club

“There has been no contact from Celtic directly to me,” he said. “If there is anything out there I have not heard it directly.”
