Liverpool complete Konchesky move

Liverpool have completed the signing of left-back Paul Konchesky from Fulham on a four-year contract.

Reds reserve duo Lauri Dalla Valle and Alex Kacaniklic have moved in the other direction as part of the deal.

Konchesky, 29, was at Anfield to watch their win over West Brom on Sunday and is familiar to Reds boss Roy Hodgson from their days at Craven Cottage.

With Konchesky arriving the Reds have allowed Emiliano Insua to join Turkish side Galatasaray on a season-long loan.

Galatasaray have the option to make the deal permanent for Insua, who was Liverpool’s regular left-back last season but has not figured for the side under Hodgson so far in the current campaign.

Instead, the Liverpool manager has opted to use regular central defender Daniel Agger on the left side of defence in the club’s league games and Fabio Aurelio in Europa league matches.

Konchesky will now reinforce the Reds defence and could make his debut in the club’s next game against Birmingham on 12 September.

The Barking-born player has two England caps and made his international debut in 2003.

He was a West Ham academy trainee before leaving to join Charlton, and went on to make 169 appearances for the Addicks.

In 2005, West Ham bought Konchesky back in a deal worth 1.5m and he made 62 appearances for the east London side.

Hodgson is also hoping to add another acquisition before the transfer window closed at 1800 BST on Tuesday.

But the 63-year-old Reds boss moved to cool speculation that it would be PSV Eindhoven forward Ola Toivenen he would be signing.

“If we can I’d like to bring in one more player and that would be excellent,” said Hodgson following the 1-0 win over the Baggies.

“We are short [in the striking department] so we don’t need to disguise the fact that it would be nice to get a striker but they are very hard to come by.

“If the right man comes along I know that the club are prepared to act but I don’t want to act on the wrong man and just add another body to the club.

“It would have to be someone who could really play alongside Fernando [Torres] and, in my opinion, improve us as a team.

“I like Ola Toivonen but he’s not the right type of player that we are looking for at the moment.”

Meanwhile, winger Nabil El Zhar has joined Greek club PAOK on a season-long loan.

The 24-year-old has not featured at all for Hodgson since he took over.

And reserve team midfielder Vincent Weijl has completed a transfer to Spanish side SD Eibar.

Blackpool 2-2 Fulham

Dickson Etuhu’s late equaliser rescued a point for Fulham and denied Blackpool a deserved victory as top-flight football made its return to Bloomfield Road after 39 years.

Manager Ian Holloway’s newly-promoted Tangerines looked on course for a momentous three points as they came from behind after Bobby Zamora – watched by England coach Fabio Capello – headed Fulham into a first-half lead.

Blackpool’s patient passing approach and attacking verve was rewarded when John Pantsil turned Luke Varney’s shot into his own net with 19 minutes remaining.

Varney then sent Blackpool’s fans into wild celebrations five minutes later as he finished in style from 12 yards after racing on to Brett Ormerod’s through ball.

Blackpool have lessons to learn – Holloway

But with three minutes left and Bloomfield Road counting down the seconds to the final whistle, Etuhu raced clear on to Moussa Dembele’s pass to beat Matt Gilks.

It was a point Fulham barely deserved after the home side dominated for long periods, but Holloway will take great encouragement from his team’s display against a side that reached the Europa League final in May.

After the Premier League made a delayed debut at Blackpool to allow work to be completed on Bloomfield Road’s new East Stand, Fulham felt the force of the backing that Holloway hopes will play a crucial part in their attempt to survive in the top flight this season.

And despite the disappointment of seeing victory snatched from them late on, the Seasiders can reflect on a respectable start of four points from their opening three games and a strong recovery from the potentially damaging 6-0 loss at Arsenal.

Their modest Lancashire ground was awash with tangerine to welcome Premier League football – and Holloway’s side opened up in a manner fitting for the occasion.

Debutant Varney, signed on a season-long loan from Derby County, almost provided the perfect start with a powerful volley that Fulham keeper David Stockdale was happy to block to safety.

And Blackpool thought they had taken the lead when Ormerod directed a header beyond Stockdale from Stephen Crainey’s cross, but the celebrations were cut short as it was correctly ruled out for offside.

Varney also fired across goal as Blackpool pressed for the breakthrough – but it was Fulham who went ahead against the run of play 10 minutes before the interval.

Dembele appeared to foul Ian Evatt as he chased Damien Duff’s pass, but referee Mike Oliver waved play on and he crossed for Zamora to head emphatically beyond Gilks.

Zamora left the action on the hour, to be replaced by Clint Dempsey, after taking a heavy knock – a moment which brought a look of concern to the face of watching England manager Capello.

Blackpool then had the ball in the net again through Elliott Grandin, but the goal was ruled out for Varney’s earlier challenge on Stockdale – a borderline decision by referee Oliver.

The home side’s deserved reward came with 19 minutes left, although they required a touch of good fortune to draw level. Stockdale parried Varney’s shot as it flashed across the face of goal, but the incoming Pantsil could only divert the ball into his own net.

If this brought scenes of elation, they were nothing compared to the wall of sound that greeted Varney’s goal to put the Tangerines ahead five minutes later.

Hughes targets more points on the road

Ormerod was the creator with a neat pass, and Varney capped an outstanding personal display by drilling a finish low past Stockdale.

Blackpool looked to be closing in on the win, but Dembele opened up their defence and former Preston man Etuhu applied a composed finish to earn Fulham a third consecutive draw.

Gilks then saved well from Simon Davies in injury time to ensure Holloway’s men claimed the point that was the least they deserved.

Holloway proud after historic day

Blackpool have lessons to learn – Holloway

Proud boss Ian Holloway said Blackpool were almost in disbelief after top-flight football returned to Bloomfield Road for the first time since 1971.

The Tangerines were denied a second win of the season when Dickson Etuhu’s late goal secured a 2-2 draw for Fulham.

But Holloway insisted it did not spoil the day at the 16,500-capacity ground.

“We’ve got to pinch ourselves we are at this level, he said. “What an achievement to get this game on. It’s a fantastic day for the club.”

Promoted to the Premier League via the play-offs after finishing sixth in the Championship last season, Blackpool won their first game at Wigan 4-0 before being thrashed 6-0 at Arsenal in their second.

After Bobby Zamora’s header gave Fulham a first-half lead against the run of play, Blackpool bravely hit back in the second period with debutant Luke Varney drilling them ahead in the 76th minute after John Pantsil’s own goal – but they could not hold out until the end.

“Our [second] goal I am absolutely delighted with,” said Holloway.

“It was some of the best football any team of mine has ever produced. “Then we lose the ball easily and they equalise, so we have some harsh lessons to learn.

“[But] I felt defensively we were much better today. Well done to everyone. Fulham are a fantastic side and Bobby Zamora looks a proper handful now.

“He is very clever and very difficult to mark. I was pretty happy when he went off. We scored two goals against Fulham. I watched Manchester United do that. If you had told me that after the Arsenal match, I’d have taken that.”

Fulham manager Mark Hughes thought his team suffered when Zamora went off with a thigh injury which could threaten his involvement with England ahead of their upcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers.

Hughes targets more points on the road

“We lost a little bit of our focus when Bobby went off,” said the Welshman. “That disrupted us somewhat.

“But we are pleased with an away point and will build on that. We haven’t picked up that many points on the road over the years.

“It is something we hope to improve on. It is key to whether we have a decent season.

“In the second half we didn’t play as well as we normally can, made a couple of mistakes and let them get back into the game.

“It is good to see Dickson Etuhu getting on the end of something. He has not scored many goals in his career. We are trying to get him forward more.”

Fulham 6-0 Port Vale

Zoltan Gera and Bobby Zamora both scored twice as Fulham eased into the third round of the Carling Cup at the expense of League Two Port Vale.

Gera headed Fulham ahead before new signing Moussa Dembele marked his debut with a goal after a left-foot strike.

Zamora finished from an acute angle before Gera added a fourth before the break, with a strike from 18 yards.

The fifth came from a curling Zamora free-kick, while Clint Dempsey finished the scoring with a long-range strike.

Vale almost pulled a goal back in the latter stages, but Marc Richards’s close-range strike was saved by Stuart Tomlinson.

And earlier in the tie Gary Roberts had picked out striker Justin Richards with a lofted pass into the box, but Fulham managed to clear the danger.

Nonetheless, Fulham, with three changes from the side that drew with Manchester United, might have scored more than six.

Dembele went close prior to scoring with a low strike from the edge of the box that Tomlinson did well to save.

Matthew Briggs impressed at left-back on his full debut – providing the cross from which Gera headed his opening goal and, later, almost picking out Dembele at the far post.

Zamora had a volley from six yards smothered by Tomlinson, who also made two good saves from Dempsey as the Premier League side repeatedly cut open their opponents.

Fulham and PSV agree Salcido deal

Salcido rattles Argentina bar

Fulham have agreed a deal to sign Dutch club PSV Eindhoven’s Mexico international left-back Carlos Salcido.

PSV told BBC Sport that the 30-year-old Salcido, who has also been linked with Liverpool, has still to agree personal terms in a move reportedly worth 1.6m.

Liverpool have been holding talks with Fulham over the possibility of signing their Fulham left-back Paul Konchesky.

Fulham boss Mark Hughes said: “It’s not a foregone conclusion Paul goes because we’re trying to bring someone else in.”

PSV would not specify the length of the contract that Salcido had been offered by Fulham.

Earlier this week the London club confirmed the signing of 23-year-old Algerian defender Rafik Halliche from Benfica for an undisclosed fee.

Fulham snap up defender Halliche

Fulham have confirmed the signing of Algerian defender Rafik Halliche from Benfica for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old, who played every minute of Algeria’s three games at the World Cup, signed a three-year deal.

“I’m so happy that my transfer to Fulham has been finalised,” he told the club website.

“To be given an opportunity to compete against some fantastic teams for a team like Fulham is something that I’ve always dreamed of doing.”

Halliche has made 20 appearances for Algeria since his debut against Senegal in May 2008.

His arrival will help plug the gap left in defence by the absence of Swiss international Philippe Senderos.

The former Arsenal player was ruled out for six months after rupturing his Achilles before the season began.

Fulham 2-2 Man Utd

Brede Hangeland made amends for an own goal with a late header to rescue a point for Fulham and spoil Manchester United’s 100% start to the season.

Paul Scholes’s 25-yard drive put United ahead but Simon Davies’ 12-yard finish deservedly drew the home side level.

Hangeland diverted a corner into his own net to give the lead to United, for whom Nani saw a penalty saved by David Stockdale minutes later.

Hangeland rose to head in from a corner to give his side a share of the spoils.

It was the least Fulham deserved for their contribution to a match that had seen them denied possession for large periods but give as good as they got against in-form opponents.

Mark Hughes

Penalty save spurred Fulham on – Hughes

The Cottagers may have changed manager since last season, but Roy Hodgson’s replacement, Mark Hughes, will be pleased to see that much of what made Fulham such a tough opponent under his predecessor remains.

No better is this illustrated than in their determination and ability to battle back into the game not only once but twice, when lesser teams would have wilted, especially after such a seemingly decisive late blow as Hangeland’s own goal.

That their keeper Stockdale also saved a penalty – diving to his right to palm away substitute Nani’s effort after Damien Duff was adjudged to have handled in the box when the ball struck his knee and then arm – between the final two goals of the game serves only to enhance this durable quality.

Such late drama was unforeseeable after the opening 10 minutes, which the away side completely dominated and deservedly led through Scholes’s superb low drive – his 150th goal during a career spent entirely with United.

Two seasons ago Scholes was sent off at Craven Cottage in a 2-0 United defeat, the first of two on the ground for the Red Devils in 2009, but he more than made up for this indiscretion with another strong performance on Sunday.

The midfielder was always available, always neat and continually central to his side’s patient, progressive and polished play.

The other key figure in United’s first goal – Dimitar Berbatov, who teed Scholes up – was also heavily involved throughout the game, shouldering much of the senior attacking responsibility in the absence of the ill Wayne Rooney.

An often maligned figure during his time at Old Trafford, Berbatov has been accused of not scoring often enough, and while he opened his account early this campaign with a goal in the 3-0 opening win over Newcastle, here he was wasteful.

He was presented with half a dozen goalscoring opportunities, and despite testing Stockdale with the majority of them, he should have done better.

But the same could be said of many of Fulham’s attacking players.

Nemanja Vidic

Please turn on JavaScript. Media requires JavaScript to play.

Vidic disappointed not to hold on for win

But for greater accuracy in their own shooting, and the superb intervention of their former goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar – who rescued his current employers United by firstly blocking from Dickson Etuhu and then somehow tipped the midfielder’s follow-up effort over the bar – they would have gone into the break level.

A quarter of an hour into the second half the home side were level as Duff robbed Patrice Evra and fed Bobby Zamora down the right, whose pull-back was fired home by the onrushing Davies.

Both sides continued to press for the advantage: Nani flicked the top of the net with a free-kick from the left and Nemanja Vidic headed wide from a corner for United, while Zamora miscued an effort past the far post from a tight angle after being found by Paul Konchesky’s flighted free-kick.

Brede Hangeland

Please turn on JavaScript. Media requires JavaScript to play.

Hangeland delighted to make up for own goal

It was no surprise that further goals came, only that they were both from the same source.

Central defender Hangeland can consider himself unlucky to see a corner ricochet off his shin and fly in after 84 minutes.

But he can be equally proud of his response at the other end, rising to head home from a corner to give his side a thoroughly warranted equaliser – made possible by Stockdale’s spot-kick save.

Dropping two points, even though early in the season, is a blow to United, with reigning champions and title-rivals Chelsea having hit six goals for the second successive game on Saturday to leave them as the only side with maximum points.

Davies signs new Fulham contract

Fulham midfielder Simon Davies has signed a new three-year contract at Craven Cottage that runs until 2013.

The 30-year-old ex-Wales international was troubled by a foot injury last term and talks over a new deal were put on hold until he proved his fitness.

“It’s great that it’s finally done,” Davies, who joined Fulham from Everton in 2007, told club’s official website.

“I’ve loved my time here, I’m excited for the future and hopefully I’ll finish my career here.”

Davies was named Fulham’s player of the year for the 2007-08 season and played a key role in their run to last season’s Europa League final.

He scored the pivotal goal in their

comeback victory over Hamburg

in the last four and also netted the equaliser in the

2-1 final defeat by Atletico Madrid.

A product of the Peterborough academy, Davies spent four-and-a-half seasons with Tottenham before joining Everton for 3.5m in 2005.

Hughes hoping to keep Schwarzer

Fulham boss Mark Hughes has played down speculation linking unsettled keeper Mark Schwarzer with a transfer.

Schwarzer, who is wanted by Arsenal and this week handed in a transfer request, was omitted from the squad for Fulham’s 0-0 Premier League draw at Bolton.

But Hughes said injury was to blame for Schwarzer’s absence and insisted he wants to retain the keeper’s services.

When asked if Schwarzer would remain at Fulham, Hughes replied: “That is the intention, yes. Nothing has moved on.”

In Schwarzer’s absence, David Stockdale produced an outstanding performance in goal for Fulham on what was only his second Premier League appearance.

That, however, has apparently done nothing to alter Hughes’ stance on keeping Schwarzer, and the Cottagers’ boss poured cold water on speculation that the 37-year-old Australian had been dropped for the game, stressing that he had failed a fitness test.

Hughes added: “Myself and Mark have had conversations and I fully understand the reasoning behind the fact that he maybe wants to take up the opportunity [to join Arsenal].

“Mark obviously sees an opportunity, and has expressed a wish to take it if he can, but I think he also understands that we have to protect our position as well, and that is what we are doing.

“We are not going to put Fulham’s position or reputation at risk by making promises we can’t fulfil, so at the moment it’s very much the status quo and nothing has moved on.”

Arsenal had a 2m bid for Schwarzer turned down in May, but the Australian wants a taste of Champions League football before the end of his career and remains keen to make the move.

“My understanding is that he has handed in a transfer request,” stated Hughes earlier in the week.

Hughes also reiterated his interest in signing Craig Bellamy, the striker who played under him for Wales, Blackburn and Manchester City, but admitted that a deal to bring the striker to Fulham was no closer.

“I said on Friday if there is an opportunity to bring him to the club, we will investigate that, but I’m aware that there are other clubs interested,” Hughes commented.

“Obviously we would like to do some things in terms of bringing him to the club, but there is a long way to go and the key to it is what Craig wants to do.

Hughes also had praise for Stockdale. “The confidence that he showed helped the back four,” he said.

“David has been training well and I have been really impressed with him in the short time that I have been at the club.”

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has hinted he is willing to make a new bid for Schwarzer, who would provide competition for Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianksi at the Emirates.

Schwarzer caught the eye last season with a string of impressive performances as Fulham reached the Europa League final, eventually losing 2-1 to Atletico Madrid.

The Australian joined Fulham in May 2008, leaving Middlesbrough after 11 years at the club and has played 100 times for the Cottagers.

“He has indicated that he would like the opportunity to leave. Obviously we haven’t encouraged Arsenal to come back to the table because they haven’t been back since May,” added Hughes.

“If they do come back and talk to me or my chief executive, then further conversations will be had but at the moment there is no point because we are not talking to anybody because they have not come back to us.”

Hughes warned Schwarzer that he would not necessarily be guaranteed first-team football at Arsenal and even admitted that he would be willing to offer the Australian an extension to his current contract, which expires next summer, in order to persuade the star to stay.

“I am sure that is something that will be discussed,” said Hughes. “I haven’t been part of that process.

“We certainly don’t want Mark to leave. We want him to be happy here. We will try and ensure he will be.”

Adams happy to return to Fulham

Port Vale boss Micky Adams admits that he and his backroom staff are keenly awaiting their return to former club Fulham in the Carling Cup.

Adams began his managerial career at Craven Cottage in 1996 as player-boss.

His assistant manager Geoff Horsfield also enjoyed his best spell there, while head of youth Mark Grew had a month on loan at Fulham in 1985.

“It’s a great draw. I was lucky enough to have a promotion with them,” Adams told BBC Radio Stoke.

Fulham won promotion from the old Third Division in 1997 after Adams’ only full season in charge.

But he may still feel that he has something to prove against a club who let him go so soon after Mohamed Al Fayed’s takeover later that year, the new regime opting instead for Ray Wilkins.

“Obviously when Mr Fayed came in things altered slightly but it’s a fantastic draw for the management team,” added Adams.

“Geoff was a player there and had a lot of success and, from my point of view, it was where I started my managerial career.”

Vale meet last season’s Europa League finalists in the second round at the Cottage on 24 August (1945 BST).
