Everton 5-1 Hull

Filed under: Hull City by: admin

Mikel Arteta scored twice as Everton reignited their quest for Europe and left Hull in the relegation zone.

The Spaniard volleyed home at the back post to open the scoring but then saw a Yakubu penalty saved by Boaz Myhill.

Teenager Tom Cairney equalised with a superb volley but Arteta slotted a fine second before an own goal from Richard Garcia made it 3-1 to the hosts.

Landon Donovan came off the bench and slammed in a fourth before Jack Rodwell completed another fine move to seal it.

All that means the Tigers are still without an away win in the league this season and well and truly failed to put down the marker demanded by manager Phil Brown.

But the day belonged to Everton, and Arteta in particular.

‘Dominant’ Everton delight Moyes

The goals were the Spaniard’s first since returning from injury and served as a timely reminder of his quality and importance to Everton’s cause.

The victory – a sixth in succession at home – equals a club record in the Premier League and lifts the Toffees up to eighth, four points behind Aston Villa.

The game was not as dramatic as Everton’s recent home success against Chelsea and Manchester United but it is matches against the struggling sides that David Moyes’ team must win if they are to qualify for Europe once again.

Arteta’s form will be vital in that quest.

The result, meanwhile, will surprise few, particularly with such bleak omens for Hull coming into the match.

The Tigers have not won at Goodison Park since the days of rationing in 1952, although some early promise hinted that record could finally change.

Everton’s defenders played a hopeless offside trap, leaving Garcia through on goal but his dink was slapped away by an advancing Tim Howard.

That served as a wake-up call to Moyes’ side, who surged forward and came within a whisker of taking the lead.

Leon Osman robbed George Boateng in midfield and fed Yakubu but a calm finish from the Nigerian hit the base of the post.

Hull’s defending looked slugged though, and they failed to learn lessons from the let-off.

Yakubu delivered a hanging cross from the left and Arteta volleyed home superbly at the back post, although some slack defending from Everton old boy Barmby allowed the Spaniard all the time in the world.

Yakubu failed to increase the advantage from the spot though.

A cross from Leighton Baines deflected into the area and Kamil Zayatte crudely brought down the Nigerian from behind – although the defender may have got a trace of the ball.

But Yakubu’s lazy run-up never looked convincing and Myhill pulled off a simple save low to his right.

Hull wasted little time in taking advantage, as Cairney scored an excellent first Premier League goal.

A free-kick was only half cleared and the midfielder pounced with a wonderful left-foot volley from just outside the area.

Brown bemoans lack of game plan

It was a goal that will live long in the memory for the 19-year-old but Hull were unable to savour the strike for long.

Victor Anichebe crossed from the right to Steven Pienaar and a clever backheel fell perfectly for Arteta to pass home from 12 yards in style.

Everything the Spaniard touched was turning to gold, and goals, and it was no surprise who inspired Everton’s third after the break.

A chipped cross looped over Myhill and Garcia, almost laughably, headed into his own net.

The hosts should really have moved further ahead when a fine pass from substitute Donovan was sidefooted over the bar by Yakubu.

But Donovan showed the striker how it should be done, wrapping up victory with a powerful drive on the angle after another teasing cross from the impressive Baines.

Rodwell put the gloss on a fine display by firing home from Donovan’s pass late on.

Hull can be grateful at least for the return from injury of Jimmy Bullard but Brown’s side are still in the relegation zone. Much will rest on a trip to basement club Portsmouth next weekend.

Everton manager David Moyes:
“He (Arteta) did some fantastic stuff. He got into the box and he’s improving all the time.

“When he’s on form we’re a really good team.

“I was a bit worried when it went to 1-1. I thought it might be one of those days but thankfully we went on to win it.”

Hull boss Phil Brown:
“I thought we were competitive in the first half but in the second we certainly weren’t. We left our game in the changing room for whatever reason.

“Everton were good but we made them look good because we didn’t get in the face of the opposition.

“Defensively I have questioned one or two but we will dust ourselves down and get on with it. We have got 10 big games now.”

Hull await news on Gardner injury

Filed under: Hull City by: admin

Hull defender Anthony Gardner will have a surgical procedure next week to assess the ankle ligament damage he suffered in the 3-0 defeat at West Ham.

Gardner, 29, was stretchered off in the second half after falling awkwardly in a challenge with Matthew Upson.

“I’m not going to put a time on it but the damage is sufficient to keep him out of the Everton game,” manager Phil Brown told the club website.

“We’ll have a look on Wednesday and assess it further.”

Gardner joined the club from Tottenham in a 2.5m transfer in 2008 but the former England international has had his share of injury problems since then.

He missed three months of his debut season at Hull with a thigh injury and later broke vertebrae in his back during an FA Cup quarter-final against Arsenal.

This season he has made 21 appearances for the club but a scan on Thursday confirmed he had suffered ligament damage so he will be sidelined again.

Survival is worth £100m – Pearson

Pearson not fearful of FA transfer probe

Hull City chairman Adam Pearson claims that avoiding relegation would be worth at least 100m to the cash-strapped Premier League club.

“If you stay up it’s the thick wedge of, for two parachute payments and one year in the Prem, 100m,” Pearson told a BBC-hosted fans forum.

“People are very canny. They won’t invest if there’s an element of risk.”

Pearson also warns that the club’s planned new training ground at Melton would be at risk if the Tigers go down.

“It is definitely on the cards,” added Pearson.

“If God forbid, the worse came to the worse and we’re not where we are now next season, we’d put it on hold, but we’re still moving ahead.

Pearson is also confident that Hull can avoid FA sanctions over transfer deals involving his predecessor Paul Duffen.

“From my discussions with them they are happy with the way the club’s handling it,” he added. “And they know we’re working in the best interests of the game and the club.”

Hull currently stand 17th in the Premier League, just a point clear of trouble, having played a game more than the bottom three.

Grimsby sign keeper Oxley on loan

Filed under: Hull City by: admin

Grimsby Town have signed Hull City goalkeeper Mark Oxley on a one-month loan deal.

The 19-year-old will go straight into Neil Woods’ side for their League Two clash with Dagenham and Redbridge.

England Under-18 international Oxley joined Hull from Rotherham in 2008 but played just a handful of reserve team games after an injury-hit first season.

The 6ft 3in teenager has been on loan at Walsall since October, but failed to make any first-team appearances.

Bullard scores on Hull comeback

Filed under: Hull City by: admin

Hull City midfielder Jimmy Bullard marked his return from injury with a spectacular goal for the reserves.

Bullard, 31, showed he had lost none of his flair when he flicked up a tapped free-kick and volleyed the ball home during a 3-0 win over Wigan.

Hull’s record 5m signing has not played since injuring his knee against Aston Villa in December.

But Bullard came through an hour for the reserves and could be on track to feature against Everton on 7 March.

With 17th-placed Hull only a point off the Premier League relegation zone, the return of the talismanic Bullard would give Tigers manager Phil Brown a much-needed boost.

Bullard helped revive the club’s fortunes in October when he returned to action after a lengthy lay-off following knee surgery in the United States.

He won the player of the month award in November and his return coincided with Hull embarking on a four-game unbeaten run.

However, it was a short-lived comeback for Bullard, with the former Fulham player injuring his other knee only 19 minutes into Hull’s Premier League tie with Aston Villa.

Brown had hoped to see Bullard return to action in January but that assessment proved optimistic, even though the injury was not as serious as initially feared.

Bullard’s confident return for the reserves against Wigan at North Ferriby could lead to him having a further run-out against Galway in a friendly on Friday.

Hull await Gardner injury verdict

Filed under: Hull City by: admin

Hull City face an anxious wait to find out the extent of a leg injury suffered by defender Anthony Gardner in the 3-0 defeat at West Ham.

Gardner, 29, was stretchered off in the second-half at Upton Park after falling awkwardly in a challenge with Hammers defender Matthew Upson.

Afterwards, Hull boss Phil Brown told BBC Sport that the injury would be assessed over the next 24 hours.

“It’s not the best,” he said. “Possibly a problem to his tibia and fibula.”

Gardner joined the club from Tottenham in a 2.5 million transfer in 2008 but the former England international has had his share of injury problems since then.

He missed three months of his debut season at Hull with a thigh injury and later broke vertebrae in his back during an FA Cup quarter-final against Arsenal.

This season, however, he has made 21 appearances for the club.

West Ham 3-0 Hull

Filed under: Hull City by: admin

West Ham turned on the style to make it two wins in a row for the first time this season as fellow relegation strugglers Hull were reduced to 10 men.

Valon Behrami capped a surging run with a third-minute opener after exchanging passes with Guillermo Franco.

And Hull’s problems increased shortly after the break when Craig Fagan was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Julien Faubert fed Carlton Cole for a slotted second before completing the win with a thumping late effort.

It was West Ham’s fourth consecutive clean sheet at home, and the emphatic scoreline – not to mention the buoyant nature of the display against a relegation rival – will surely please manager Gianfranco Zola.

West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola

Zola wants more from Hammers

The Hammers came out of the blocks at lightning speed and although they did not build on their overall superiority until after Fagan’s dismissal, their performance was brimming with a brio and belief that have too often been missing this season.

They were aided and abetted by a Hull side who, rarely in it apart from a brief spell of pressure before the break, were left with a mountain to climb after Fagan’s departure.

The result leaves Phil Brown’s side just a point above the drop zone.

As for West Ham, who now sit four points clear of trouble in 15th, after a season of seemingly endless turmoil both on an off the pitch this was hardly the first game to invite the label ‘must-win’.

However, with Hull fast closing on the dubious distinction of going a full calendar year without away league victory, few previous fixtures had merited that billing with such authenticity.

With a dozen games left and some daunting away assignments ahead – Tuesday night’s visit to Old Trafford is followed by trips to Chelsea, Arsenal, Everton and Liverpool – West Ham’s Premier League future is likely to be shaped at Upton Park.

No one will be more aware of that reality than Zola, so it was a measure of the West Ham manager’s faith in Franco that the Mexico international was preferred to Mido in attack.

The Egyptian striker has been an influential performer in his two appearances since arriving on loan last month, and his omission will doubtless have had some supporters scratching their heads.

Yet Zola’s confidence in Franco, who was restored to the starting line-up at the earliest possible opportunity after a two-month layoff with a muscle complaint, was vindicated in two minutes and 10 seconds.

That is how long it took Franco to capitalise on Behrami’s surging run into the area by somewhat fortuitously feeding the ball back to the Swiss international, who fired home his first Premier League goal since November 2008.

It was the cue for an inspired performance by Behrami, whose zest and incisive runs might have yielded a hat-trick by half-time but for the excellence of Boaz Myhill.

The Hull keeper parried a firm shot from Behrami before showing wonderful athleticism to claw away another effort at the near post, twisting in mid-air with his momentum carrying him in the opposite direction.

With the Hammers starting swiftly, Myhill had been on overtime from the opening minute, when he reacted sharply to paw away an Alessandro Diamanti free-kick.

Not to be outdone, Robert Green made a vital save from a meaty George Boateng effort on the stroke of half-time, but it was a rare moment of concern for the West Ham keeper.

Reeling from Behrami’s early opener, Hull became increasingly tetchy, Paul McShane going nose-to-nose with Franco before Fagan picked up a booking for a foul on Scott Parker.

The cost of the latter incident for Hull’s hopes of taking anything from the game became apparent shortly after the break when Fagan was dismissed for pulling back Diamanti.

The Italian perhaps made the most of what little there was in the challenge, but Fagan should have known better and, with Hull depleted and the Hammers still in effervescent mood, a second goal felt inevitable.

Hull defeat self-inflicted – Brown

It arrived when Faubert delivered a beautifully-weighted pass to Cole from just inside his own half, the ball rolling perfectly beyond Hull left-back Andy Dawson for the England international to slot an assured finish across Myhill.

The claret-and-blue confidence that had flowed all game went into overdrive, the excellent Diamanti almost scoring from his own half with an audacious effort that had a red-faced Myhill scrambling backwards desperately.

Myhill avoided a moment to rank alongside Neil Sullivan’s infamous embarrassment at the hands of David Beckham, but not long afterwards Faubert stormed into the area before firing a vicious curling effort beyond the Hull keeper.

By then Brown had made a triple substitution, which meant a serious late injury to Anthony Gardner, who was stretchered off after falling awkwardly, only compounded Hull’s misery on an afternoon when they were outclassed.

Hull manager Phil Brown:

“It was self-inflicted, we had a game plan but it was unhinged by poor decision-making.

“The sending-off was also self-inflicted, it was a poor decision by Craig Fagan to make the tug because he was already in the book.

“The first diagnosis of Anthony Gardner’s injury isn’t good, he has a problem with both his tibia and fibula.

“It was a bad day at the office to say the least.”

West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola:

“It was a good performance; we can do better, but the difference was the way we started.

“We were solid throughout the game and the second goal was important for us.

“Robert Green’s save was worth a goal to us, because it allowed us to reorganise at half-time.

“The whole team is getting better; the more confidence you get, the more the players can give.”

Boateng not thinking about new deal

Hull City midfielder George Boateng says he thinks he is in good form.

The Tigers are just one place above the relegation zone with teams below them having games in hand.

The 34-year-old told BBC Look North: “I’m delighted with my form and I’m delighted with the team’s performances. We’re heading in the right direction.

“As the boss would say, we’re singing from the same hymn sheet. We’ve got Jimmy Bullard coming back from injury and Tom Cairney’s playing very well.”

Boateng ban overturned on appeal

Filed under: Hull City by: admin

George Boateng has won an appeal aginst the three-match ban imposed after he was sent off in Wednesday’s Premier League defeat at Blackburn.

The 34-year-old Hull midfielder was shown a straight red card by referee Lee Probert after a challenge on Rovers midfielder Morten Gamst Pedersen.

“To say it is a nonsense is an understatement,” said Hull manager Phil Brown after the match.

“It is clearly a clash of heads and a brave challenge by both players.”

Hull settle dispute with Duffen

Filed under: Hull City by: admin

Hull City have settled their financial dispute with former chairman Paul Duffen out of court to “bring an end to all disputes between the parties”.

The Premier League club had accused Duffen of spending company money for his own personal use.

The club had also alleged Duffen’s company received payments from agents in return for using those agents to deal with the transfer of players.

Duffen had denied the allegations at a preliminary hearing at the High Court.

A statement read: “Further to a statement made on 22 January 2010 regarding legal action commenced by Hull City against its former chief executive officer, we are pleased to confirm that we have agreed settlement on terms satisfactory to the club.”

In January, new Hull chairman Adam Pearson claimed insufficient care had been taken over transfers and the deals.

Duffen was part of a consortium that bought the Tigers from Pearson in June 2007, the year before they were promoted to the Premier League.

They began the 2008-09 season well but struggled towards the end of the season and only escaped relegation on the last day of the campaign.

Duffen stepped down as executive chairman of the club and Superstadium Management Company Ltd in October 2009, with Pearson returning to the club as chairman.

At the time, a formal statement said the club wished “to express its gratitude to Paul for his outstanding contribution as chairman during a period of unprecedented success for Hull City AFC.”
