Birmingham 1-0 Fulham

A clever goal from Lee Bowyer earned Birmingham victory over Fulham as Alex McLeish's men extended their unbeaten run to four matches.

Bowyer latched on to James McFadden's lofted pass before cushioning the ball past Mark Schwarzer for his fourth goal of the season.

Fulham dominated the second half and almost levelled when Clint Dempsey's header was tipped over by Joe Hart.

But Birmingham held firm to inflict Fulham's first loss in six games.

It was another impressive performance from McLeish's side, who have now accrued 15 points from 13 games to sit comfortably in mid-table.

The Scotsman has moulded a side that is difficult to beat and, in McFadden and Bowyer, has players capable of unlocking tight defences.

Fulham boss Roy Hodgson left Damien Duff on the bench following his midweek exertions with the Republic of Ireland. Zoltan Gera took his place on the left, with Simon Davies making his first start of the season following an ankle injury at Erik Nevland's expense.

The visitors had the game's first opening when Bobby Zamora found space on the left and, ignoring well-placed team-mates to his right, curled a shot well wide of the post.

Birmingham went close to taking the lead when a McFadden cross was deflected on to Cameron Jerome's chest and into the arms of a grateful Schwarzer.

Moments later, the home side went in front, with McFadden again providing the creative spark.

The Scotland winger spotted Bowyer's well-timed run and lofted a pinpoint pass into his path. The midfielder, still with work to do, reached the ball ahead of the advancing Schwarzer and clipped it past the keeper.

It was a goal reminiscent of Bowyer's prime at Leeds, a late darting run into the box followed by a clinical finish.

In driving rain at St Andrews, Fulham found their feet as the half went on, only to find Birmingham's defence in good working order. Gera found the time in the area to line up a shot which was superbly blocked by Roger Johnson.

Fulham made the brighter start to the second period. Zamora cushioned Paul Konchesky's cross into the path of Gera, but the Hungarian's half-volley bounced over the bar.

The Londoners continued to enjoy the majority of the possession and came close the equalising when Dempsey's header from Stephen Kelly's cross drew an acrobatic save from Hart.

It was the kind of stop that will do Hart's chances of making England's World Cup squad no harm.

Hodgson sent on Duff for Kelly after 73 minutes and the Irishman made his presence felt with a low shot from outside the area which whistled past Hart's post.

But Fulham still could not break down Birmingham's impressive back line, and McLeish's men held on for a well-earned three points.

“We did our very best to score a goal but when we did get an opportunity the goalkeeper was in fine form or someone got in a good block.

“I don't think we could have had more possession, more crosses or corners, it was just a question of the ball not falling kindly enough.

“We had a few players missing but the players who came in did really well.”

“I'm delighted because we played a tough game today.

“Sometimes it wasn't too pretty. We've played better than that and lost games but we showed we can win a match with strength and resilience.

“As long as they keep their feet on the ground and show the same level of resilience and application we can have a good season.”

Blackburn's preparations for Sunday's Lancashire derby at Bolton have been hit by the news manager Sam Allardyce will miss the next three Premier League matches in order to undergo surgery.

Allardyce will have an operation on a coronary artery having “complained of brief episodes of chest discomfort” according to the club. The Rovers boss will be absent from the game against former club Bolton, the midweek fixture at Fulham and Stoke at Ewood Park next weekend.

Assistant manager Neil McDonald will take charge at the Reebok as Rovers attempt to halt aa woeful record on the road of 10 straight defeats.

Wanderers themselves will be looking to bounce back from a worrying recent dip in form. The Trotters have lost their last three games, shipping 13 goals in the process and finding the net just once, and have failed to keep a clean sheet in the league all season.

Blackburn's record at the Reebok will do little to reassure worried Wanderers fans – Rovers have not lost at their local rivals since winning promotion back to the Premier League in 2001.

Liverpool 2-2 Man City

Liverpool and Manchester City fought out a draw at Anfield that failed to provide compelling evidence to support the claims of either club to finish in the Premier League's top four.

The game sparked to life with four second-half goals after a first 45 minutes that was a monument to mediocrity – but both Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez and his Manchester City counterpart Mark Hughes will see a draw as two points lost.

Liverpool had already lost Daniel Agger and Ryan Babel to injury when Martin Skrtel turned in Steven Gerrard's free-kick to give them the lead after 50 minutes.

But City, encouraged by Liverpool's apparent willingness to sit back on their advantage and enlivened by the belated introduction of Carlos Tevez for Gareth Barry, levelled on 69 minutes when Emmanuel Adebayor headed home from Craig Bellamy's corner.

Stephen Ireland's close-range finish, converted as Liverpool appealed in vain for offside, gave City a lead they barely deserved, but they were then guilty of a loss of concentration as Yossi Benayoun turned in David Ngog's deflected cross to make sure the points were shared.

Lucas wasted a glorious chance to give Liverpool victory deep into stoppage time when he rose unmarked to meet Gerrard's corner, only to head wide.

It ensured City, who lost captain Kolo Toure injured at half-time, extended their recent sequence to six successive Premier League draws, equalling their top-flight record set in 1913.

And for Liverpool, it was the latest day of frustration in front of their own fans at Anfield – compounded by another lengthening of their injury list.

City had hoped to use a visit to Liverpool to confirm their credentials as genuine challengers to the Premier League's established order, but a lifeless first hour and the resurfacing of defensive frailties demonstrated there is still much work to do.

Liverpool captain Gerrard, as expected, was fit after the groin injury that has troubled him recently, but once again Fernando Torres was ruled out by a hernia.

City boss Hughes left Tevez on the bench – and how the visitors cried out for his industry and inspiration in a turgid opening 45 minutes.

Liverpool had the first chance to make a breakthrough after only six minutes, but Skrtel's header was turned to safety by Shay Given after Gerrard's delivery had flicked off the head of Toure.

It proved to be an expensive moment for Liverpool as Agger clashed heads with Toure in the incident and was stretchered off with concussion, forcing Benitez to introduce Greek defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos.

As if Liverpool's injury list was not long enough, Babel then saw a rare Anfield start curtailed by a foot injury after he accidentally collided with Gerrard on the edge of the City penalty area. He attempted to continue but eventually limped off, to be replaced by Benayoun.

Gerrard, predictably, was providing Liverpool's best hope and he almost enlivened the grim proceedings with a rising shot that flew over in front of an expectant Kop.

City, for all their lavish spending, were woefully short of attacking ideas, with Shaun Wright-Phillips being particularly wasteful in possession. He had their best opportunity 10 minutes before the interval when he was played in just inside the Liverpool area, but he failed to hit the target.

City suffered an injury blow themselves when captain Toure failed to appear at the start of the second half, with Nedum Onuoha coming on.

And their problems increased after 50 minutes when Skrtel took advantage of poor City defending – an Achilles heel this season – to give Liverpool the lead.

Pablo Zabaleta was penalised for fouling Ngog, and when Gerrard's free-kick was swerved in with menace, Skrtel got ahead of Adebayor to apply the crucial final touch and grab his first Liverpool goal.

City boss Hughes, having watched in frustration as his side failed to make any impact on Liverpool's re-shaped defence, made a change on the hour when he sent on Tevez for Barry.

Liverpool had helped City's cause by appearing to sit back on their lead, and they paid the penalty in familiar fashion after 69 minutes.

Adebayor was allowed to rise unhindered and direct Bellamy's corner past Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina, to the obvious disgust of Benitez in the technical area and delight of Hughes.

And the turnaround was complete with 14 minutes left as Ireland stole in on a cross from Wright-Phillips from a suspiciously offside position to put City ahead – but as their fans celebrated there was another swift twist in the tale.

Ngog's cross took a deflection that took Given out of position, allowing Benayoun to slide in at the far post and score with the simplest of finishes.

Liverpool held sway in the closing stages and forced a succession of corners, with Lucas heading a presentable chance wide with virtually the final action of a game that sparked into life after the break.

“You cannot be happy with a home draw, but to lose three players from your game plan is very difficult.

“And of course we had three players on the bench who have been for treatment in Belgrade and had not been training with the team.

“It is not easy to manage, but the reaction of the players was fantastic. You cannot ask for more from players in such a position.”

Manchester City boss Mark Hughes:
“We restricted Liverpool to a very few opportunities but the ones they did have, they scored from.

“But we restricted their influential players from having an impact on the game.

“We were good on the break and carried a real threat in the second period when Carlos Tevez came on. Carlos gave us a real energy.

“My players are disappointed, they had an opportunity to win. Scoring twice and getting a point at Anfield is something you would normally be happy with.”

Hull 3-3 West Ham

Hull City retrieved a two-goal deficit to claim a point despite finishing the game with 10 men in a thrilling encounter against West Ham.

West Ham's Guillermo Franco nodded home a Junior Stanislas corner before Jack Collison headed in Scott Parker's pass.

But Hull hit back in dramatic fashion, Jimmy Bullard drilling in a deflected free-kick and a penalty either side of a near-post strike from Kamil Zayatte.

Bernard Mendy saw red before Manuel Da Costa struck to give West Ham a point.

It was a breathlessly unpredictable encounter, yet one which did little for either side in their bid to pull clear of the lower reaches of the Premier League.

Having been two down with only 11 minutes on the clock, Hull's Phil Brown will doubtless be the happier of the two managers.

But West Ham counterpart Gianfranco Zola will rue his side's failure to protect a two-goal lead for the second time in under a month.

The beleaguered Brown had called on his players to reproduce the spirit and level of performance exhibited against Stoke, but a vibrant start from West Ham threw Hull into early disarray.

Stand-in goalkeeper Matt Duke's fingers were still smarting from an early Valon Behrami effort when Stanislas aimed a well-flighted corner, West Ham's first of the game, into the six-yard box.

Shrugging off the attentions of Richard Garcia, Franco nodded a firm downward header beyond Duke to claim his second Premier League goal since his summer arrival from Villarreal.

With the irrepressible Bullard pulling the strings in midfield, Hull sought a swift riposte and might have been rewarded when a Stephen Hunt corner caused momentary mayhem in the West Ham area.

Yet just as Hull seemed to be getting a foothold in the game, West Ham doubled their lead.

Gathering the ball from a position deep on the left flank, Parker clipped a precise ball towards Collison, who out-jumped Andy Dawson to direct a header over the poorly-positioned Duke.

Again Hull refused to be bowed, continuing to press forward as an end-to-end encounter developed.

With the half hour approaching, Hull finally translated their enterprise into more tangible reward, pulling a goal back through a Bullard free-kick that flew into Green's top left-hand corner after ricocheting off Parker and Cole in rapid succession.

With Bullard increasingly influential – one cross-field pass to Hunt was nothing short of majestic – the mind drifted back to West Ham's late-October visit to Sunderland, where Zola's men relinquished a two-goal lead to draw 2-2.

Sure enough, with the interval looming Hull won a free-kick that was curled towards the near post by Hunt before being sweetly turned in by Zayatte.

Worse quickly followed for the Hammers when referee Mark Clattenburg awarded what looked a harsh penalty against Julien Faubert for a foul on Craig Fagan, who was backing into the Frenchman on the edge of the area.

Bullard converted the spot-kick with aplomb, firing the ball high to Green's right to leave the England keeper grasping at thin air.

The Hammers looked shell-shocked as they trudged back to the dressing room, but the second period was barely nine minutes old when Mendy's dismissal paved the way for further drama.

As Parker raced towards the Hull area he was unceremoniously upended by the Frenchman, who, as the last defender, had to go.

Within 15 minutes West Ham were level, Da Costa turning in a Stanislas corner from close range to set up a dramatic finale.

The game ended amid a flurry of chances at either end, with Hammers substitute Luis Jimenez particularly culpable when he brushed the side netting after being fed by Parker.

Hull then cried foul when substitute Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink went down under a Matthew Upson challenge, but Clattenburg dismissed the appeal.

Arguably the best opportunity fell to Collison, whose late header was brilliantly parried by Duke, leaving both sides with a deserved point.

Hull manager Phil Brown:

“I'm disappointed we've dropped two points, but we're playing some good football now.

“In the face of adversity there was a lot of speculation about myself, the team and the club, but we've shown spirit.

“We ground out the point in the end, but the players are more relaxed and they're playing better.”

West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola:

“We are scoring a lot of goals, we just need to defend a little bit better.

“Certain things are not working well and we just need to focus and get them right.

“I didn't see the third goal as a penalty, but Hull played well.”
